    About Vecinos Unidos

Vecinos Unidos makes a difference in the lives of students in grades 1-6 through homework assistance and summer enrichment programs—and we’ve been doing so since 1997! We provide free academic assistance and enrichment to elementary students who come from non-English speaking homes and have fallen behind their peers. With our caring volunteers to guide them, students experience improved academic success and greater confidence in their ability to learn and achieve.

    About the Role

Vecinos Unidos is seeking a collaborative, detail-oriented Instructional Resource Manager to lead our educational material management and student progress tracking while directly engaging with our students. This essential board role oversees our math and language arts learning repository (aligned with Fairfax County Public Schools), analyzes student performance data, and ensures every child has the targeted work they need to succeed. It is an ideal opportunity for an educator, student-teacher, or academic enthusiast looking to shape an afterschool academic program while gaining nonprofit board leadership experience.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage and organize math and language arts curriculum resources for approximately 15 elementary students across grades 1–6.
    • Collaborate directly with our classroom aide to prepare, curate, and distribute worksheets and learning materials tailored to student needs.
    • Ensure resources are aligned with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) standards.
    • Collect report cards, administer student assessments, and analyze academic performance data to track growth and share results with the board.
    • Volunteer during our Academic Assistance Program at least one afternoon each week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, 4:00–6:30 p.m.).
    • Attend and actively contribute to monthly (virtual) board meetings.
    • Participate in board discussions, strategic planning, and organizational decisions.
    • Serve as an ambassador for Vecinos Unidos in the community.

    What We're Looking For

    Required

    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Availability to volunteer at least one afternoon per week in-person (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, 4:00–6:30 p.m.) at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center.
    • Ability to attend one virtual Board of Directors meeting each month.
    • Ability to serve a renewable board term.
    • Experience working with elementary-aged children in an educational, tutoring, or youth setting.
    • Strong organizational skills and comfortable managing spreadsheets, records, and student assessment data.
    • Complete a successful background check.

    Preferred (Not Required)

    • High school diploma required; pursuit or completion of a degree in Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
    • Familiarity with English language learner (ELL/ESL) academic needs or FCPS curriculum standards.
    • No previous board experience or Spanish language skills are required. We provide orientation and support to help new board members understand their responsibilities and become successful contributors.

    What You'll Gain

    • The opportunity to make a lasting difference in students’ educational success through direct classroom mentorship.
    • Hands-on experience in curriculum management, educational data analysis, and student assessment tracking.
    • Leadership experience in both classroom instruction support and nonprofit governance.
    • Experience with strategic planning and organizational decision-making.
    • A chance to work alongside a dedicated and diverse team of board members and volunteers.
