    About Vecinos Unidos

Vecinos Unidos makes a difference in the lives of students in grades 1-6 through homework assistance and summer enrichment programs—and we’ve been doing so since 1997! We provide free academic assistance and enrichment to elementary students who come from non-English speaking homes and have fallen behind their peers. With our caring volunteers to guide them, students experience improved academic success and greater confidence in their ability to learn and achieve.

    About the Role

Vecinos Unidos is seeking an organized, detail-oriented, and dependable Secretary to support our board governance, internal communications, and organizational record-keeping while directly engaging with our students. This role keeps our leadership team aligned and efficient, while offering a hands-on connection to our mission through weekly volunteering in our Academic Assistance Program. It is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build non-profit administrative leadership skills, gain governance experience, and make a meaningful impact in the Herndon community.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain official board records, take and distribute clear, accurate meeting minutes for all monthly board meetings, and manage organizational documentation.
    • Coordinate monthly virtual board meeting logistics, manage agendas, and track board action items and follow-ups.
    • Support internal board communications, ensuring members have timely access to documents, updates, and calendar schedules.
    • Volunteer during our Academic Assistance Program at least one afternoon each week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, 4:00–6:30 p.m.).
    • Attend and actively contribute to monthly (virtual) board meetings.
    • Participate in board discussions, strategic planning, and organizational decisions.
    • Serve as an ambassador for Vecinos Unidos in the community.

    What We're Looking For

    Required

    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Availability to volunteer at least one afternoon per week in-person (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, 4:00–6:30 p.m.) with our Academic Assistance Program.
    • Ability to attend one virtual Board of Directors meeting each month.
    • Ability to serve a renewable board term.
    • Dependable, organized, highly collaborative, and comfortable managing meeting notes and records.
    • Complete a successful background check.

    Preferred (Not Required)

    • Experience with administrative support, note-taking, or digital record management (e.g., Google Drive, Docs, Sheets).
    • Experience working with children, youth programs, volunteers, or nonprofit organizations.
    • No previous board experience or Spanish language skills are required. We provide orientation and support to help new board members understand their responsibilities and become successful contributors.

    What You'll Gain

    • The opportunity to make a lasting difference in students’ educational success through direct classroom mentorship.
    • Core administrative and governance experience in nonprofit management.
    • Leadership experience in both the classroom and nonprofit board operations.
    • Experience with strategic planning and high-level organizational decision-making.
    • A chance to work alongside a dedicated and diverse team of board members and volunteers.
