All volunteers must be at least 18 years old and go through an application process (background check, drug screening, etc.) and training.

- Comfortable interacting with a variety of people, including patients, families, and staff
- Have an animal assistance therapy certification
- Proof of liability insurance through certifying organization
- Proof of current vaccination
