Volunteer Position: Support Crew Member

Volunteer Position: Support Crew Member - The Louisiana Steam Train Association is seeking volunteers to support the preservation, maintenance, and operation of its historic railroad equipment. This includes the upkeep of facilities, track, and assistance with public events.

Volunteer Opportunities - Support crew members may assist with:

• Carpentry and general construction
• Electrical work
• Public events and visitor assistance
• Painting and surface preparation
• Safety program support
• Volunteer training and orientation
• Track inspection and maintenance
• Yard, grounds, and facility maintenance
• Cleaning, organizing, and general project support

Experience and Training - No previous railroad, construction, or maintenance experience is required. Volunteers will work alongside experienced crew members and receive hands-on instruction appropriate to each assignment. This is an opportunity to learn new skills, gain practical experience, meet others interested in railroad preservation, and contribute to the restoration and development of LASTA’s facilities and operations. Individuals with experience in construction, electrical work, painting, landscaping, safety, training, event management, track work, or facility maintenance are also encouraged to volunteer and share their knowledge.

All work will be performed under crew supervision and in accordance with applicable safety procedures. Volunteers must be willing to follow instructions, use required personal protective equipment, and work cooperatively as part of a team.

Schedule and Location - Volunteer activities are generally performed on scheduled workdays and during special events at LASTA facilities in the New Orleans and Garyville areas. Participation may be based on individual availability and current project needs. Come out, meet the crew, learn a new skill, and help preserve Louisiana’s railroad history for future generations!
