    About PromiseStories | Creative Storytelling

PromiseStories is MAP’s storytelling ecosystem spanning books, comics, animation, podcasts, and digital media. The division develops original narratives that elevate youth voice, explore identity, and transform lived experience into meaningful creative work.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Comic Book Writer to develop original comic narratives that reflect MAP’s mission and engage young readers through visual storytelling. This role focuses on crafting compelling scripts, characters, and story arcs that can be translated into illustrated and animated formats.

The ideal candidate understands how to write for sequential art and enjoys collaborating closely with illustrators and creative teams.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Write comic scripts, including dialogue, panel descriptions, and scene direction
    • Develop original characters, story arcs, and narrative concepts
    • Collaborate with illustrators and artists to bring stories to life visually
    • Contribute to storyboarding and narrative pacing
    • Adapt stories for multiple formats (print, digital, animation) when needed
    • Ensure stories are age-appropriate, culturally responsive, and dignity-centered
    • Participate in creative brainstorming and editorial sessions
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    • Strong storytelling and writing skills
    • Understanding of comic book or graphic novel scripting
    • Ability to write visually and think in sequences and panels
    • Strong collaboration skills with creative teams
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred

    • Experience writing comics, graphic novels, or visual scripts
    • Portfolio or writing samples demonstrating narrative work
    • Interest in youth storytelling, identity, and social impact themes
    • Experience working with illustrators or animation teams

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Experience creating original comic content for a mission-driven organization
    • Collaboration with illustrators, writers, and creative directors
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • Opportunity to publish meaningful stories that reach young audiences
    • A meaningful role shaping narratives that inspire imagination and identity

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume (required)
