Help Save Dogs from Kern County Animal Services by Posting on Nextdoor

Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS), a national nonprofit based in Thousand Oaks, CA, is seeking volunteers in Washington, Oregon, ,Nevada, Arizona and British Columbia to share at-risk dogs from Kern County Animal Services in Bakersfield, CA on NextDoor in order to find them forever homes. More than 400 dogs are living in overcrowded, substandard conditions in two warehouses that make up the shelter.

The shelter has a high euthanasia rate due to a proliferation of dogs in the county from backyard breeders, insufficient low-cost spay/neuter and high rates of abandonment of animals. CAPS can arrange transportation to Washington and Oregon through transport services. Adopters in Arizona and Nevada would need to pick up at the shelter or pay an individual to transport half-way or the entire way. BC adopters can pick up their dogs in WA near the border.

Since mid-February 2022, CAPS has saved more than 460 dogs through social media, a Petfinder page, shelter to shelter and shelter to rescue transfers. Prior adopters in Washington have been sharing at-risks dogs from the shelter on Nextdoor, with dogs getting adopted.

CAPS will provide information and photos/videos on the dogs that should be posted. The Nextdoor posts will have our contact information so that potential adopters can contact us directly.
