In 1986, Jose Mateo founded José Mateo Ballet Theatre (JMBT) on the principle that access to dance could transform lives. Twenty-nine years later, his company performs more shows than any other Boston-area dance troupe, the JMBT School provides ballet training for over 600 students annually, and Dance for World Community repositions the role of dance in our culture to enrich our communities, locally and beyond.
JMBT believes that the educational, health, community building, and cultural value of ballet can be shared and enjoyed by everyone, benefiting constituents regardless of age, body type, or background—economic or cultural. This belief drives our work, which consists of three interconnected programmatic areas: Performance (20-member professional company), Education and Training (The School), and Dance for World Community.
