The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has an international mandate to protect refugees, persons whom have fled their country of origin due to well founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or belonging to a particular social group. The Regional Legal Unit (RLU) for the Americas is located in San Jose, Costa Rica and works in four main areas: Media and Public Affairs, Protection advice and Support, Policy Development, and Capacity Skills Development and Knowledge Management in the Americas. Within these four areas, some of the main functions include the monitoring and update of the Spanish and Portuguese websites, identification of Good Practices, workshops (both internal and external), support to university professors, monitoring of mixed migration flows, and identification of protection needs.
