 Shelter Operations Manager

Job Type:

  • Salary range is $58,000-$60,000 commensurate with experience.
  • Reports To: Director of Housing Services
  • Full Time (M,W, F: 9am-5pm; T, TH: 12pm-8pm) 
  • No weekends. 
  • On site work required, with one day Work From Home

 Role Summary:

The Shelter Operations Manager role is responsible for supporting the safety and self efficacy of survivors of domestic violence living in the emergency shelter, upkeep, and routine maintenance of the shelter. They will provide supervision and support to part time staff. 

The person in this role will also coordinate events, and activities, and implement protocols to sustain a positive, trauma-informed residential living environment for shelter residents and staff of all ages and cultural backgrounds. As in a congregate setting, there is regular exposure to cleaning products, chemicals and solvent and in-frequent exposure to emotional support and service animals. Requires frequent ascending and descending stairs.

A day in the life of this role: 

Working in the emergency shelter means being a part of a community with a passion for helping and empowering people. While each day will look different, here are some aspects you can count on:

  • You will be able to provide life changing support to individuals and families survivors of domestic violence. 
  • Your days will include coordinating activities, de-escalation support, maintenance of the facilities, supervision of staff and interns, administrative processes and purchases, on-going learning, and responding to new and on-going developments at the shelter.
  • You will be building and developing relationships with staff and clients in order to ensure a smooth functioning of the shelter. 
  • You will be exposed to cleaning products, chemicals and solvent, and occasional work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • You will routinely move supplies or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, while at times ascending or descending stairs.

Summary of Duties: 

  • Provide direct supervision to 8-10 part time staff, and a seasonal student intern.
  • Answer Transition House’s hotline to provide emotional support, referrals, and resources, and ensure 24/7 coverage of the hotline. 
  • Assist with screening and intake for new shelter clients, and coordinate clients moves.
  • Responsible for all facility repair needs and coordinating with external vendors, and annual inspections.
  • Ensure and maintain cleanliness, safety, and usability of the shelter facility. 
  • Manage the assignment and completion of household chores for clients.
  • Manage monthly client assistance for residents including requesting and submitting receipts. 
  • Manage shelter materials budget, purchase responsibly, and conduct inventory of shelter needs. 
  • Facilitate bi-monthly shelter house meetings with shelter residents.
  • Uphold and implement shelter guidelines, and living expectations. 
  • Carry out emergency and safety tests and protocols. 
  • Assist the Director of Housing in the hiring and onboarding of new staff members. 

What we need from you:

  • 2 years of experience supervising interns, volunteers, and/or staff members.
  • Maintenance and facilities experience, or a willingness to learn and a track record learning new skills.
  • Able to climb stairs frequently, pick up, and move items up to 40 pounds.
  • High level of proficiency with the Internet, Google Suite, Zoom, and Microsoft Office.
  • Creativity, problem solving, innovation with strong organization and presentation skills.
  • Self-starter, and disciplined to regularly set and achieve work goals.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience providing trauma-informed advocacy and support for individuals and families, and capacity to build trust with those who have experienced systemic oppression. 
  • Experience working with extremely marginalized people including individuals who are experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use, or domestic violence. 
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, collaborate with colleagues, and effectively communicate. 
  • Ability and desire to work with an enthusiastic and highly driven team.
  • High-level of comfort working within a diverse and multicultural environment. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate experience.
