Mission and Philosophy

The Shalom Hartman Institute is a leading center of Jewish thought and education, serving Israel and North America. Our mission is to strengthen Jewish peoplehood, identity, and pluralism and to ensure that Judaism is a compelling force for good in the 21st century.

Position

SHI NA is recruiting an experienced, dynamic, motivated, thoughtful, and organized individual to direct SHI NA’s initiatives for North American campus and young adult professionals. This position is part of a team leading the Institute’s Wellspring initiatives.

The Director of Wellspring Campus and Young Professionals Initiatives will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategy for transforming Israel education and leadership development on campus using the Shalom Hartman Institute’s iEngage curriculum, unparalleled faculty, and growing body of digital content. The primary audiences are Hillel professionals, young professionals (age 22-26) and professionals working with young adults. The Director will build on the existing substantial work of the Institute in this field while innovating new strategies and approaches that will deepen and broaden our impact.

Current programs for campus professionals include the Edward Fein Campus Professional Fellowship, learning opportunities throughout the year, and ongoing consultations with Hillel professionals. The Director will develop strategy and initiatives to expand Hartman’s reach to more Hillel professionals to further support and enrich this large professional network. This person will work closely with the Manager of Student Relationships, supporting their efforts to stay connected with Hevruta (gap year) alumni on campus, manage the Hartman College Student Fellowship, and support current student programs, including immersive experiences and campus-based programming. The Director will also be responsible for designing and launching a new Wellspring area, engaging Jewish young professionals and the professionals who support them.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with deep knowledge of Jewish life on campus as well as an intimate understanding of the challenges facing Hillel professionals and the needs of Jewish college students. This person will also have a strong familiarity with the larger field of Jewish education and a passion for creating learning opportunities about Jewish identity and Israel. This person will be an excellent communicator, extremely organized, independently creative and generative of new opportunities, strong on follow-through and relationship-building, and a quick learner. This individual will additionally possess a strong understanding of and commitment to the work of SHI NA more broadly. This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Wellspring. Responsibilities

Program Development:

  • Develop and strengthen an effective strategy to grow the impact of Hartman learning for campus and young adult professionals across North America;
  • Oversee and manage the implementation of all programs for campus professionals, young adult professionals, and potential new audiences;
  • Build and sustain relationships with campus professionals to maintain Hartman’s strong reputation in the field of campus work, ensuring that campus professionals continue to turn to the Institute for support for leadership- and Israel-related issues;
  • Build and sustain relationships with Hillel International staff focusing on leadership development and educational enrichments for field professionals;
  • Partner closely with SHI NA content advisors to develop an educational plan for each program, and to prepare faculty for teaching in all programs;
  • Stay abreast of developments in Jewish campus life;
  • Develop and oversee evaluative practices that contribute to a culture of reflective learning;
  • Partner closely with Hartman colleagues leading Wellspring programs for teens, professionals from other fields of informal and formal Jewish education, and the Hevruta gap year program.
  • Maintain an understanding of the iEngage curriculum, its goals and broad content.

Fundraising and Management:

  • Supervise program and support staff, and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues in development, marketing, and the Jerusalem campus, as well as with SHI faculty;
  • Sustain relationships with existing and prospective funders and partner with colleagues to build new relationships;
  • In partnership with the Institute’s development team, assist with preparing grant proposals and reports;?
  • Shape and oversee the program budget.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience and success in mid-level or senior Jewish communal leadership positions;
  • 8+ years of professional experience with Jewish life on a North American college or university campus;
  • Excellent communication skills including experience in facilitating, public speaking, editing, and writing;
  • Deep understanding of major issues facing Israel and communal tensions regarding Israeli politics; a commitment to SHI NA’s values-based approach;
  • Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively;
  • Flexible work style with the ability to work under tight deadlines and with shifting priorities in a dynamic, high-energy environment;
  • Exceptionally organized and detail-oriented with a strong professional demeanor;
  • Good sense of humor;
  • MA or equivalent;
  • Willingness to travel, including stays of 7-10 days to Jerusalem approx 2 times a year and several 3-4 day domestic conferences and shabbatons.

Salary range and benefits: $120,000 - $150,000, commensurate with experience and geographic location. Very competitive benefits package.
