JOB DESCRIPTION  

PROGRAM  ASSOCIATE

The Moriah Fund is a private foundation dedicated to promoting human rights and social justice. Our priorities include strengthening civil rights and democracy in the U.S. and Israel; protecting abortion rights; addressing educational inequities; and advancing racial justice. We are currently seeking a talented Program Associate with a passion for social impact.

Description of Position: The Moriah Fund’s Program Associate will play a key role on a small team, providing both programmatic and administrative / operational support. The Program Associate will review and write summaries of grant proposals and reports; collect, analyze and organize information from grantees; process and track the status of grants; and perform organizational and administrative tasks. Through interaction with and support of grantees, the Program Associate will develop in-depth knowledge of issues related to democracy, education, human rights, abortion rights, and racial justice. The Program Associate will initially support the Black Voices for Black Justice Fund (BVBJ), a pooled philanthropic fund focused on racial justice that was created by The Moriah Fund in 2020 and is currently administered by The Moriah Fund. The Program Associate role is a unique opportunity for a professional with a passion for social justice and an interest in a career in philanthropy. 

Primary Responsibilities

Program Support 

  • Carefully reviews proposals submitted to the Fund, and supports Executive Director in evaluating them and writing clear, concise and accurate summaries for the Board;
  • Carefully reviews progress reports submitted by grantees, and supports the Executive Director in evaluating and summarizing them for the Board;
  • Collects and synthesizes information from BVBJ awardees and writes updates on their impact for the BVBJ website.

Grantee Relations

  • Interacts via teleconference, email and telephone with Moriah grantees (including senior leaders from some of the most impactful nonprofits in the U.S. and across the globe) staying current about the successes and challenges facing current and prospective grantees; 
  • Responds to applicant inquiries, track the status of proposals and awards; 
  • Coordinates grant agreement processing, report reviews, and amendment requests with CFO and other foundation staff;
  • Creates content and manages social media accounts in order to elevate and amplify the successes of our grantees;
  • Periodically reviews the website and drafts updates and revisions as needed and manages communication with the website developer about changes / updates.

Administrative and Operational Support

  • Provides administrative and technological support, including scheduling support for the Executive Director and President, as needed;
  • Organizes documents and maintains records, including creating and regularly updating spreadsheets with information on Moriah grantees and BVBJ awardees;
  • Ensures compliant and accurate processing of all grants from approval to disbursement;
  • Works with CFO on grants-related reporting, budget tracking, and overall continuous improvement for the grants management function;
  • Handles general office duties, as assigned.

Events and Logistics Support 

  • Assists with identifying opportunities for grantees to share their work with other funders at conferences and convenings; takes the lead in writing conference proposals and organizing panels of grantees and awardees, and assists with travel arrangements for grantees, as needed; Performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements: 

  • BA or BS with a minimum of 5 of relevant office experience, 10+ years preferred; 
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, writing, editing and proofreading skills; 
  • Motivated, results-oriented and productive; a “doer” who consistently takes initiative and demonstrates a strong desire to continuously learn, grow, and increase their impact; 
  • Self-starter with a positive, can-do attitude and stellar time management skills; proactive and able to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple deadlines;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and a strong belief in democracy, human rights, abortion rights, educational equity and racial justice; desire to learn more about a broad array of issues as well as to learn about the work of our grantees and continuously find ways to support them; 
  • Strong conceptual, critical, and creative thinking skills; 
  • Team player with a professional demeanor who demonstrates humility, respect, integrity, judgment, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and warmth; 
  • Ability to handle communications tactfully and professionally with close attention to detail; able to represent The Moriah Fund in any environment, including with grantees as well as leaders from the philanthropic community;
  • Strong social media skills and sophisticated understanding of how to effectively amplify grantees and awardees on social media;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides, Signal and Slack, with interest in and enthusiasm for learning new tools and technologies;
  • Willingness to travel to Fund-hosted convenings if  needed; 
  • Experience in philanthropy is a plus as well as interest in current events, politics and global issues. 

 Commitment and Compensation:

  • This role is full-time and virtual. The location is flexible with a preference for Annapolis, MD; Washington, DC, or Baltimore, MD (or, if based elsewhere,  a willingness to travel occasionally to the DC region and NYC for in-person meetings as needed).
