Position Description: 

Working closely with the Director of Fundraising, the Deputy Director of Foundation Giving owns strategy development and execution for the institutional/foundation-gifts portfolio within the organization’s larger movement-driven fundraising model, centering donor-organizing practices and relationship-based fundraising. They will advance Community Change’s revenue goals and multi-year sustainability; complement the fundraising team’s major donor and individual giving program; and support the organization’s efforts to diversify funding streams beyond the current cohort of foundation and institutional funders. 

The Deputy Director of Foundation Giving develop the fundraising strategy to maintain and grow the complimentary program-specific and general support foundation portfolio; drive a deeply engaged and personalized approach to funder cultivation; manage information and relationships, including those of principals and senior leadership; and direct the work of the foundation fundraising staff, which includes grant writing, deadline and deliverables tracking, and portfolio and relationship management.

The Deputy Director is able to learn quickly, work collaboratively, pivot nimbly, and drive projects independently. They are committed to working in diverse and cross-functional teams, resourceful, effective, and a persistent problem-solver who is able to exercise good judgment and meet deadlines. This position reports to the Director of Fundraising and will supervise two grant writers (Development Strategists). 

The Deputy Director will see fundraising as a vital contribution to the movement for social justice. They will support Community Change’s leadership in managing their specific fundraising portfolios, and they will support and cultivate the organization’s culture of philanthropy. They will be committed to supporting the growth of mid-career staff to achieve their professional goals. 

A portion of time will be spent working with Community Change's sister organization, Community Change Action.

Principal Responsibilities: 

Grant Portfolio Management and Growth

• Develop and lead multi-year fundraising strategies that build relationships with philanthropic actors, institutions, and vehicles in order to secure the revenue to fulfill the organization’s mission. For fiscal year 2024, the enterprise’s projected budget is $33,000,000. 
• Support the unique model that “embeds” fundraising team members within program teams to collaboratively develop funding strategies and pipelines and manage funder deliverables. 
• Working hand-in-hand with the Director of Fundraising, Development Strategists, and organizational leadership, drive the identification of new foundation prospects; management and cultivation of relationships with key institutional funders; and solicitation and stewardship of grants. 
• Partner with the Director of Fundraising in developing and executing long-term strategies for and managing multiple internal stakeholders around the institution’s largest funders. 
• Collaborate with lead staff for individual major gifts to navigate complex giving structures that bridge individual and institutional giving. 
• For emerging program areas, consult with program colleagues to capture the strategies, outcomes, and deliverables of new program areas and connect them with funders.
• Support a Culture of Philanthropy across the organization that partners with senior leaders in fundraising and funder cultivation and that supports their fundraising activities as part of an integrated development strategy supported by the fundraising team.
• Forecast foundation revenue, monitor and report regularly on the progress of the institutional fundraising program.
• Ensure that data are captured properly in Salesforce and used to inform fundraising activities.
• As needed, assist with the creation of grant proposals and other content for funder audiences. Contribute to strategy for donor communications, events, and briefings.
• Represent Community Change in meetings with foundation staff and other outside audiences.
• Remain up to date on trends in philanthropy, especially on those impacting the social justice and community organizing sectors.

Leadership and Supervision

• Supervise and direct the work of the Development Strategists to develop funding proposals, track and report on grant deliverables, and drive prospect cultivation.
• Cultivate professional growth of Development Strategists and provide guidance on work tasks and performance.
• Nurture staff to approach fundraising as an organizing opportunity, melding industry best practices with relationship-driven tactics. 

Qualifications: 

• Experience managing relationship and deliverable execution for a large grant portfolio, both in the number of grants and the scale of funding, including a minimum of 5 years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising with supervisory experience. 
• Experience in staff management, including a commitment to growth and leadership development; management experience in a rapidly changing environment and collaborative team/reporting structures.
• Knowledge of and dexterity within the national social justice and/or organizing networks' landscape and its funding environment, including the major funders, national movement organizations, and community-based partner groups. Existing funder relationships appreciated.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships internally and externally. Innovative and creative with a fresh perspective, as well as the ability to champion new ideas thoughtfully and thoroughly.
• A problem solver; tenacious, and proactive with the ability to get things done. Determined and decisive, exhibiting judgment and grace under pressure.
• Aptitude to show persistence and determination when faced with challenging situations and ability to adopt new ways of working as these are developed across the organization.
• Proficiency in Google Suite, Outlook, MS Office applications, and Salesforce.
• Strong writing and editing skills, including experience crafting and editing written content for philanthropic audiences.
• Deep commitment to the mission of Community Change and the project of building power with low-income communities of color; passion for social justice and a commitment to work in solidarity with the people directly impacted by injustice.

Travel Requirements: Up to 10-15% annually

Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is not included in Community Change’s bargaining unit and is covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Salary and Benefits: $130,000 - 140,000 annual salary. Community Change also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans.
