Position Description

The Progressive Massachusetts Funders Collaborative (PMFC) is searching for a dynamic leader to serve as Development & Membership Manager. The position is based in Massachusetts.

The Development & Membership Manager will play a central role in shaping our growing organization. Working in collaboration with the Executive Director (ED), the Development & Membership Manager will ensure that we are identifying donors who are interested in long term political and civic empowerment strategies and are committed to securing the resources needed to fund Massachusetts’ progressive movement. This individual will play a critical role in refining and executing a membership recruitment and retention strategy and should have experience with both organizing principles and fundraising management.

Who We Are

Founded in 2014, PMFC is a group of social justice donors throughout the state working to advance a Massachusetts focused, progressive agenda across the Commonwealth. PMFC is a fiscally sponsored project of NEO Philanthropy Action Fund.

What We Do

PMFC believes that the best way to achieve long-term, sustainable, systemic progressive change is by partnering with and funding movement-led grassroots organizations. Our funding strategy explicitly centers community based organizations - primarily those led by women and people of color - committed to strengthening grassroots political power and the resurgence of policies that help all but particularly underrepresented populations. We are committed to putting racial equity at the center of our giving.

How We Do It

PMFC identifies gaps in the electoral infrastructure and leverages our funding to fill those gaps. We fund projects that connect and align the full progressive ecosystem, crossing issue areas and with impact beyond any one campaign. We help to scale new and emerging organizations, give to candidates committed to this radical reimagining of what is possible in the Commonwealth, and center women and people of color in our funding.

Primary Responsibilities:

Member Engagement & Fundraising

  • Support ED in development and execution of fundraising programs to hit topline fundraising goals. Support advisory committee members and PMFC donor community in list development, outreach, and donor meetings.
  • Partner with ED to execute member engagement program: develop strategy and conduct events and communications to build and steward a vibrant member community. Manage systems to track new members and introduce them to PMFC; successfully retain current members; and support member-led outreach & recruitment events, initiatives, and development.
  • Develop and maintain individual donor relationships through regular 1-1 touch points: in-person meetings, phone calls, email, etc.
  • Develop and maintain foundation relationships through events, individual conversations, proposals and reports.
  • Conduct research, outreach to and recruitment of in-state and national prospective donor-members.
  • Plan, design and distribute reports, briefings and other educational and promotional materials to members and member prospects.

Organizational Strategy & Program Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on strategic analysis of the Massachusetts progressive infrastructure landscape, scaling needs, and PMFC impact opportunities.
  • Work with funded and strategic partners to support development and execution of planning processes, particularly with respect to developing budgets, fundraising plans and evaluation methods to build capacity.

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Demonstrated commitment to progressive values.
  • Experience with EveryAction fundraising platform and DonorSearch development tools to identify/track/report on contributions and finances preferred.
  • Basic familiarity with 501(c3), (c4) and 527 distinctions & regulations preferred.
  • Graphic design skills and some fluency with InDesign strongly preferred.
  • Ability to build strong, candid relationships with a variety of audiences and stakeholders, including staff, funders, and external strategic partners.
  • Experience leading fundraising programs or initiatives, particularly in the electoral space
  • Familiarity and experience in people centered or membership organizing.
  • Strong people skills and ability to exercise good judgment and discretion.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking. Second language competency preferred but not required.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage several projects at once.
  • Ability to work proactively and independently.
  • Assertiveness and tact in handling confidential and sensitive issues and documents.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, to work independently, and to create new systems and structures as needed.
  • Strong work ethic.
