About NYLAG:

Founded in 1990, NYLAG is a leading civil legal services organization combating economic, racial, and social injustice by advocating for people experiencing poverty or in crisis. Our services include comprehensive, free civil legal services, financial empowerment, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community partnerships. NYLAG exists because wealth should not determine who has access to justice. We aim to disrupt systemic racism by serving individuals and families whose legal and financial crises are often rooted in racial inequality. NYLAG goes to where the need is, providing services in more than 150 community sites (e.g. courts, hospitals, libraries) and on our Mobile Legal Help Center. During COVID-19, most of our services are virtual to keep our community safe. NYLAG’s staff of 350 impacted the lives of nearly 113,000 people last year.

Job description

NYLAG is accepting applications for the role of Manager of Individual Giving, a new position, to support the creation, implementation, and management of an individual giving program at NYLAG. The Manager’s primary responsibility is to collaborate with the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships to plan, develop, and execute direct, multi-channel fundraising strategies aimed at maintaining and increasing general operating support from individual donors at all levels of giving.

The ideal candidate is an empathetic and ethical storyteller, a compelling writer, and a strong relationship-builder who, through direct marketing efforts, can speak to diverse audiences in meaningful ways within the context of advancing social, racial, and economic justice in New York City. The Manager of Individual Giving is a member of the Philanthropy team in NYLAG’s Development Unit and will report directly to the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships, the Manager will develop and implement a comprehensive and multi-channel annual fund program that increases annual giving and strengthens donor and volunteer engagement. Key responsibilities include:

  • Inform, engage, connect, and solicit current, lapsed, and prospective donors via direct response communications and fundraising tools (print and email appeals/newsletters, crowdfunding/peer-to-peer initiatives, digital acquisition campaigns, etc.)
  • Lead the strategy development, design, and implementation of all direct mail solicitations to increase the number of donors and prospects.
  • Manage the on-line giving program to increase annual participation under the direction of the Director. Executes initiatives to encourage new donors to join and existing donors to give online.
  • Create and manage a detailed schedule of direct marketing/donor communications activities, including research, copywriting, design, production and mailing, and list selection/segmentation.
  • Secure testimonials, stories, photos, and videos from NYLAG clients, volunteers, and staff in a respectful and trauma-informed manner. Craft compelling narratives that convey the need for NYLAG’s services and the impact of donor support.
  • Participate in standing meetings with the marketing unit and leaders of programmatic units to foster cross-team collaboration and improve engagement with various audiences.
  • Collaborate with the Development Coordinator to 1) maintain and update individual donor records in the donor database; and 2) ensure all donations are properly documented and stewarded.
  • Assist other Philanthropy efforts, including working events on and off site such as the Annual Gala, Pro Bono Awards, and other events.
  • Stay current on annual giving best practices and maximize use of data and other resources to make strategic recommendations and implementations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or comparable work experience.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience with nonprofit fundraising, donor communications, and individual giving programs.
  • Experience working with a donor database and email marketing platform; Salesforce NPSP and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement (formerly known as Pardot) experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with donation platforms and other similar fundraising software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, collaborate, and build consensus.
  • Outstanding analytical, creative, and strategic thinking skills.
