Location: New York, NY (Hybrid)

CSH is seeking results-oriented individuals committed to racial equity, advancing anti-racism practices, and sharing their financial talent to support a mission driven organization that leads efforts to expand housing and service solutions for highly impacted populations. This is a hybrid role based out of our New York City headquarters.

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for assisting with the accounting of financial transactions, monthly close, account analysis, budgeting, reporting and compliance. Your work will incorporate the maintenance and development of accounting principles, agency guidelines, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. You will work under the direction, supervision, coaching, and mentorship of the organization’s Controller.

What you will do:

Accounting and Financial Reporting: 50%

  • Participates in the monthly and annual general ledger closing.
  • Assists in preparation of monthly financial statements, annual financial audits, annual budgeting and, interim projection reporting needs, as necessary.
  • Prepares and uploads and standard and recurring journal entries, and performs analysis of general ledger accounts and prepare adjusting journal entries as necessary.
  • Ensures quality and accuracy by performing analytical review of financial results.
  • Responsible for maintaining supporting schedules, source documents, and general ledger activity for assigned accounts.
  • Prepares monthly bank reconciliations; and update and reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts quarterly.
  • Works with accounting team to investigate and resolve reconciling items.
  • Assists with program audits, interim and year-end audits including but not limited to: completing audit requests, completing assigned financial close tasks, financial statements and Form 990.
  • Creates custom and standard reports to communicate results to various department heads in a clear, consistent and concise fashion.
  • Stays abreast with accounting regulations and ensure adherence to nonprofit accounting standards and internal policies.

Budgeting: 20%

  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of department and project budgets, providing insightful variance analysis and recommendation to department heads or project managers.
  • Partners with program leaders to develop budget modifications and strategies that ensure maximization of cash flow and accuracy of financial statements.
  • Posts and maintains budget data in the accounting system.

Accounts receivable: 20%

  • Leads processes for recording contract and grant accounts receivable invoices, accounts receivable tracking and coordinating with colleagues and project managers to follow up on outstanding balances as needed.
  • Responds timely and professionally to inquiries surrounding accounts receivable invoices.
  • Partners with various finance staff to streamline the accounts receivable process.

Process improvement: 10%

  • Participates in the implementation of best practices to enhance the overall effectiveness of the finance team.
  • Contributes to long-term projects as part of a team, as needed. Works on ad-hoc projects as assigned by the Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager.
  • Drafts and updates documentation of processes and procedures for areas of responsibility, where necessary.

How we work:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance strongly preferred but we recognize knowledge and experience comes in many forms including experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP guidance, budgeting concepts and techniques.
  • At least 5+ years of progressive accounting or financial experience. Experience in not-for-profit industry is a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with financial reporting and analysis, detail-oriented and possess strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with members of the team at all levels.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound business ethics, including the protection of proprietary information.
  • Exposure to various accounting systems with advanced data analysis Excel skills. Prior experience with NetSuite is a strong plus.
  • Ability and interest in gathering data, compiling information, and preparing reports.
  • CSH uses a Microsoft Office environment. Proficiency is required or a commitment to self-learn and achieve proficiency upon hire.
  • Candidates seeking to work remotely, or hybrid must provide their own access to a secure high-speed internet signal (preferably hard wired) at a capacity sufficient to support video, web, and email processing simultaneously based on their personal work environment. This is typically 100Mb and above.

Compensation:

CSH offers generous benefits, opportunities for professional growth, and competitive salaries based on geographic location. Our range in New York for this role is $77,000 - $96,000. Our ranges are broad, and it is customary for candidates to join CSH at the lower half of the range to leave room for growth, learning, and development in the role and range. It is uncommon for starting salaries to fall above the mid-point. We negotiate actual salaries with final candidates based on their exact location, experience in similar roles, and expertise related to the qualifications.
