About the Role

The United States Communications Campaigner at Oil Change International (OCI) is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies, tools, and tactics to advance the goals and activities of the United States team. This role works closely with other members of the United States team, cross-team communications staff, and key partners. Oil Change International’s United States team works with national, grassroots, and frontline partners to pressure international, federal, and state-level targets to stop the expansion of fossil fuels and catalyze a fossil fuel phase-out rooted in science and justice.

DEADLINE: This role will be close on Sunday June 23, 2024 however we will be accepting and contacting candidates on a rolling basis

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development (20%)

  • Work closely with OCI’s United States Team to scope, design, and implement communications and media strategies to support ongoing work and activities; 
  • Plan and execute communications strategies to advance our messaging and campaign goals around key international political moments and report launches; and
  • Coordinate with OCI’s Communications Director and Communications team to align on goals, approach, and priorities for United States communications and help improve OCI’s shared communication platforms. 

Media Outreach (20%)

  • Collaborate with Communications Manager to develop and maintain international and regional press lists relevant to United States team work; 
  • Build relationships with and pitch stories to reporters around United States team campaigns and initiatives; 
  • Monitor media coverage and public narratives related to United States team work in international, national, and regional news outlets; and
  • Track metrics to assess impact. 

Content Creation & Dissemination (45%)

  • Create compelling and impactful materials to reach target audiences by translating complicated materials into understandable, attention-grabbing, and energizing content (this could include press releases, fact sheets, messaging guides, emails to supporters, blog posts, web content, social media content, graphics, videos, partner toolkits, opinion pieces, and more); 
  • Ensure all content is aligned with campaign messaging and brand guidelines; 
  • Manage content calendars and publishing schedules; 
  • Use OCI’s communications platforms to set up and send campaign-related press releases, supporter emails, and social media posts; 
  • Prepare rapid reactive content related to United States team priorities; and
  • Develop communications materials to support advocacy efforts such as petitions, action alerts, and campaign toolkits. 


Partner Engagement (10%)

  • Coordinate and lend communications support to regional and local partners engaged in campaigns resisting fossil fuel infrastructure; 
  • Collaborate with communications-focused allies and partners in civil society networks to drive campaign visibility; 
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with ally and partner communicators; 
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration with key stakeholders and partners; and
  • Provide communications support to partner organizations (as needed). 

Administration (5%)

  • Update and maintain quarterly and annual goals and individual work plans; 
  • Participate constructively in staff and team meetings; 
  • Coordinate messaging and activities with OCI’s cross-team Communications staff; 
  • Help maintain OCI’s shared calendar of upcoming projects and deadlines; and
  • Respond to administrative requests in a timely and courteous manner, including submitting timesheets and expense reports by established deadlines. 

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Required Skills / Experience

  • Fluency writing, reading, and speaking in English; 
  • Three to five years of experience in advocacy efforts related to social justice and/or energy and climate policies, with a track record of developing and implementing communications strategies; and
  • Ability to translate technical or complicated materials into motivating and energizing content for engaging media, advocacy targets, civil society partners, and/or supporters. 

Desired Skills / Experience

  • Existing relationships with journalists covering climate and energy issues in the United States and relevant international spaces; 
  • Familiarity working in a remote global office environment (e.g. using video calls, communicating on messaging platforms, etc.); 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and develop relationships in multicultural teams across multiple time zones; 
  • Experience developing and implementing social media strategies (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.); 
  • Familiarity with media tracking and engagement tools (e.g. Meltwater, Cision, etc.); 
  • Familiarity with Google Apps (e.g. Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Groups); 
  • Experience with graphic design tools (e.g. Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) and video editing tools; and
  • Fluency writing, reading, and speaking in Spanish.
