Organizational Background: The Black Parent Initiative (BPI) is a growing parent centered organization. Our mission is to inspire and mobilize Black parents to ensure their children achieve educational excellence. We accomplish our mission by conducting parent and caregiver educational sessions; holding support groups; and providing families with culturally specific education. We assist families’ access to critical services through strategic partnerships that allow for the overall stabilization of the family unit.

Position Objective: The Education Impact Coordinator (EIC) is responsible for providing education support to students and families registered in Sawubona School Program. This position is in person with a selected BPI in office day(s). The primary location for this position may be inside the school to provide overall cultural identity support to the school community. The EIC will plan, coordinate, execute, student and parent engagement activities for families served and school community. The EIC will work with BPI Parent Leaders quarterly to develop course offerings. They may supervise volunteers, tutors other contract staff to ensure the ultimate success of all course offerings.

The ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics:

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute parent affinity and empowerment groups at assigned locations. Provide workshops, classes, groups, and activities for parents at their local school(s) and/or districts on a regular basis
  • Ensuring accurate data is collected for all classes, groups and sessions
  • Create and execute a yearly communication/ marketing plan for school, parent, and students events with use of flyers, social media posts, phone calls, emails and text
  • Assist with planning Sawubona yearly events to meet contract requirements
  • Maintain a positive and professional relationship with community, staff and families at all times
  • Attend meetings with key partners, staff and other contacts, taking notes and reporting back as needed
  • Create, instruct, revise and maintain literacy curriculum to suit the needs of the student and schools
  • Facilitate student literacy groups at assigned school, provide back up facilitation as needed
  • Submit invoices and receipts in a timely matter to secure authorization from Operations
  • Responsible for outreach to caseload regarding the available opportunities to parents and community at large
  • Responsible for assessing and reporting service and program effectiveness to Program Manager
  • Participates in BPI staff meetings, development activities, and professional growth opportunities for the purpose of keeping current on new information, innovative ideas, and techniques
  • Maintain and secure a variety of records and/or documents (confidential and non confidential) (e.g. parent contacts, student records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or ensuring documentation for future reference in accordance with administrative requirements
  • Provides support on projects to include monitoring deadlines, facilitating processes, and ensuring effective implementation of services
  • Recruit volunteers from the community to host various workshops and classes to speak directly to program participants
  • Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by Program Manager for the purpose of fulfilling the needs of the organization's programs
  • Participate on internal and/or external committees as requested by the Program Manager or Program Director
  • Keep an updated calendar with external assignments, all meetings and out of office activities.

Data Collection Duties:

  • Adhere to systems and structures for tracking accurate program reporting and audits
  • Use Apricot database to enter participants, track contacts, track attendance, and write case narratives
  • Submit weekly and monthly reports in a timely manner

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years or more experience working in the public school system, youth services, or social service environments
  • Experience with event planning and execution, large group facilitation, broad skill base of skills to draw from, educational theories
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated leader who can work independently, as well as, part of a team
  • Knowledge of family engagement research and literature, as well as, pedagogy
  • Strong knowledge of computers and fundamental technology (i.e. infocus projectors, laptop computers, DVD players, Microsoft office software, etc.)
  • Must have understanding of Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets
  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems, have attention to details
  • Demonstrated understanding and respect for diverse families’ economic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds and situations
  • Experience with developing collaborative partners and building relationships with constituents in the community
  • Patience, flexibility, and strong listening skills
  • Understanding of classroom achievement data
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends
  • Ability to handle multiple complex tasks with a high level of organization and attention to detail in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Highly motivated with strong results-orientation and ability to effectively collaborate with others and drive projects to completion
  • Demonstrated experience in building strong relationships

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field, as well as experience teaching adult learners
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; both organizational and time management
  • Ability to supervise and manage staff and work collaboratively in a team
  • Self-starter, flexible, motivated, and able to take initiative in all situations
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, work under pressure and meet multiple deadlines
  • Certified tutor experience a plus
