Organization Mission: Ethos is dedicated to the promotion of music and music-based education for youth in underserved communities.


Location:

Rural communities across Oregon, including but not limited to, the communities of Condon, Mitchell, Monument, and Wolf Creek. Some service is also carried out in Portland, Oregon.


Summary of Position:

Rural Outreach Program (ROP) half and full-time members will be placed in rural communities, reporting to the Program Director and Site Supervisor. ROP members will primarily be responsible for teaching music to school aged youth during and after school four to five days per week in target communities that would not otherwise have music programming. In addition, ROP members will assist in training and supervising local volunteers. Service generally occurs Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. 


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Teach general music classes to pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students.
  • Teach elective music courses at the middle and high school level.
  • Organize and/or teach after-school individual and/or group instrument or vocal lessons.
  • Recruit and train community members to be volunteer teaching assistants.
  • Encourage and track youth, volunteer, and parent involvement in all activities.
  • Complete two days of volunteer service outside of normal service site hours, in conjunction with national service days.
  • Attend Ethos and AmeriCorps sponsored orientations, training, and meetings.
  • Complete and submit in a timely manner all Ethos and AmeriCorps required reports and time sheets, including mid and end of year evaluations (see Member Handbook).
  • Complete 1700 hours of service over 11 months (full), 1200 hours of service over 9 months (three quarter), or complete 900 hours of service over 11 months (half).


Non-Essential Responsibilities:

  • Organize student performances, community music events, and community classes in each town.
  • Consult with staff on recruitment and long-term programming plans.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background and passion in music performance or education, however other fields are also welcome provided the applicant can be a proficient teacher.
  • Experience with youth is a must.
  • Familiarity with at least 2 instruments preferred.
  • Organized, creative, resourceful and self-motivated.
  • Must have own transportation.
  • Applicants must be over 18, certify that they have or will obtain a high school diploma/GED, pass strict state and federal background checks, and hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident.
  • Must apply to be an AmeriCorps member at www.americorps.gov


Pay/Benefits:

  • For Full-Time Members: A $21,000 living allowance ($1,909 per month) over an 11-month term of service. An education award of $7,395 upon completion of service, to pay tuition or student loans.
  • For Three-Quarter-Time Members: A $15,750 living allowance (monthly payment depends on start date) over a 9 month term of service. An education award of $5,546.25 upon completion of service, to pay tuition or student loans.
  • For Half-Time Members: An $10,500 living allowance ($1,750 or $ 954.50 per month) over a 6-month or 11-month term of service. An education award of $3,697.50 upon completion of service, to pay tuition or student loans.
  • Eligibility for student loan forbearance and interest payments.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Child care assistance. 
  • Monthly housing stipends, gas and relocation reimbursement.
