APPRENTICESHIP SPECIALITY

Responsible for providing guidance to AFSCME’s affiliated unions interested in developing or enhancing an apprenticeship program for their current or prospective members. This position will also coordinate national/multi-affiliate efforts around registered apprenticeship. Programming related to apprenticeship may include but is not limited to registered apprenticeship programs, unregistered apprenticeship and training programs, pre-apprenticeship programs, youth apprenticeship and supportive training and education funds.

Key Duties:

  • Responds to a variety of routine requests and inquiries from AFSCME affiliates and IU offices around apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship, youth apprenticeship and education and training funds.
  • Assists AFSCME affiliates with decision points in apprenticeship program creation.
  • Delivers presentations in webinars, trainings, meetings, conferences, and other live events around the country. Prepares session outlines and materials and secures needed equipment. May serve as a panelist at conferences and meetings.
  • Assists AFSCME affiliates who maintain or want to establish union or joint labor-management training and education funds, including funds regulated under the LMRA and/or ERISA, to support apprenticeship and workforce development efforts within their union’s jurisdiction.

GRANTS FUNDING SPECIALITY

Responsible for supporting AFSCME’s affiliated unions’ workforce development efforts by identifying public and private grant opportunities, providing technical assistance with grant writing and navigating common grant application systems, and connecting affiliates with potential funding sources. This position will also seek grant opportunities, compose and coordinate grant applications, and facilitate funder relationships on behalf of the International Union (IU) to support national or IU-coordinated workforce development efforts. Workforce development efforts may include but are not limited to registered apprenticeship programs, pre-apprenticeship programs, youth outreach, career pathway development, and recruitment, entry, and advancement strategies for public service work.

Key Duties:

  • Researches, identifies, and tracks grants and other supportive funding mechanisms which may support AFSCME’s workforce development efforts at the national or affiliate level. Regularly searches for new public and private funding opportunities relevant to job training, workforce development, and apprenticeship. Informs and assists affiliates who may be interested in pursuing those opportunities.
  • Seeks grant opportunities, composes and coordinates grant applications, and facilitates funder relationships on behalf of the International Union (IU) to support national or IU-coordinated workforce development efforts. May serve as lead in the administration of grants for national initiatives including budgeting and preparing periodic reports.
  • Provides technical assistance with all aspects of composing funding applications including but not limited to minimum requirements, plan outlines and narratives, and budgets.
  • Delivers presentations in webinars, trainings, meetings, conferences, and other live events around the country. Prepares session outlines and materials and secures needed equipment. May serve as a panelist at conferences and meetings.

This opportunity includes travel throughout the US to guide and support AFSCME’s affiliate members in developing and sustaining their workforce development efforts.   • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, advanced degree desirable with course work, depending on specific duties, in workforce development, economics, employee training and education, labor relations, or related area of study.
