Monteverde Friends School: High School Humanities Teacher
Monteverde Friends School seeks an experienced, passionate high school (grades 7-12) Humanities teacher to join our small bilingual Quaker school on August 1, 2024. The ideal candidate will instill and foster a passion for global history, geography, and human rights and integrate these essential topics into the school’s curriculum and activities.
Note: Our Humanities classes are taught entirely and solely in English.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in History or Humanities; teaching certification highly desirable.
- Teaching experience in middle and/or high school.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A high level of organization, initiative, and energy.
- A willingness to collaborate with classroom teachers, school administration, and other specialist teachers.
- Creativity and flexibility in solving problems, a sense of humor, enthusiasm for designing innovative lessons, and strong interpersonal skills that encourage cooperation.
- An intention to join our international team of teachers for at least two years.
Full-time high school faculty members have the following responsibilities:
- Teach up to 22 class periods (which include classes, homeroom responsibilities, delivering Quakerism curriculum, or assisting in other classes).
- Plan, prepare, and teach engaging lessons on your topic of study, including modifying or adapting lessons for English Language Learners and students with learning differences.
- Maintain attendance and grade records.
- Write semester and yearly curricular descriptions.
- Write reports on the progress of all students at the end of the first and second semesters.
- Participate in parent/teacher conferences twice yearly and additionally as needed.
- Maintain contact with students’ families.
- Serve as a homeroom teacher/advisor
- Oversee planning and fundraising for the homeroom’s annual class trip. (Example: homerooms make and sell lunches and host evening talent shows)
- Supervise students during recess and lunch as assigned.
- Participate in committee work. (Committees support graduation, service-learning days, Quaker life, learning support, Children’s Day, Cultures Day, etc.)
- Lead mini-courses each quarter (Electives such as cooking, health & sexuality, hiking, songwriting, etc.)
- Participate in weekly Meeting for Worship and the life of the school community.
- Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, and other meetings as needed.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary as determined by step on the salary scale.
- Health care through the Costa Rican national health care system (CAJA).
- Visa / Immigration expenses are reimbursed in the second year of employment.
- Aguinaldo (Christmas bonus, equal to one-twelfth of yearly pay).
- Participation in national teacher retirement plan (Magisterio managed by Jupema).
