COIPP Executive Director Job Announcement

Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership (COIPP), a mid-sized nonprofit organization in

Frederick, Maryland, is seeking its first paid Executive Director. Reporting to the Board of Directors (Board), the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for implementing policies established by the Board, establishing and executing major goals and objectives for the organization, and has overall day-to-day

operational responsibility for the organization. The ED represents the organization to the community, donors, funders, supporters, and the general public. Receives supervision from the Board.

This is an exempt, full-time position, offering a benefits package which includes life insurance

coverage, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), parking reimbursement, paid time off, and a monthly stipend toward health insurance costs. Salary range is $85K to $100K, based on qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities

General Operations:·        

  • Understands mission/vision of the organization and can effectively articulate it to others
  • Develops and implements strategic and operational plans, policies, and goals that further the mission of the organization
  • Takes fiduciary responsibility for the financial health of the organization    E
  • Executes Board-approved policies   
  • Maintains effective and cost-efficient programs
  • Maintains official records and documents, and ensures compliance with all federal, state,and local regulations

Leadership and Management:

  •  Plans, organizes, and directs the organization’s operations and programs
  • Ensures ongoing programmatic excellence, regular data-driven program evaluation, and effective systems
  • Develops, maintains, and supports a strong Board, serves as ex-officio on committees, and builds Board involvement with the strategic direction of the organization
  • Attends Board meetings and provides support to the Board members
  • Ensures that the Board is kept fully informed regarding the organization and environment       
  • Builds and maintains a culture which attracts, motivates, and retains a diverse staff committed to the mission
  • Maintains a working knowledge of developments and trends in the field

Financial:     

  • Works seamlessly with the Board Treasurer and contracted Bookkeeper and Accountant, assuring timely and accurate financial and accounting records of the organization
  • Ensures that financial goals are achieved and operating expenses are within budget
  • Works with the Board in the preparation of the annual budget
  • Ensures that financial controls are met

Human Resources:

  •      Hires, supervises and, if necessary, dismisses staff       
  • Leads, coaches, and develops the staff to create a well working team     
  • Ensures that job descriptions are current     
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals
  • Formulates and implements corrective action as needed   
  • Ensures volunteers are engaged and recognized for their work

Resource Development & Communications:   

  • Expands and maintains grants and fundraising activities to support and grow existing program
  • Targets and develops grant proposals together with staff and Board
  • With the Board, manages fundraising campaigns and donor cultivation
  • Acts as the spokesperson for the organization
  • Assures community knowledge of the organization and its programs
  • Works in partnership with current and future agencies, organizations, and individuals in the private and public sectors

Qualifications:

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, or closely related field, with 5+ years of senior management experience (preferably in the nonprofit realm)
  • Proven leadership, coaching, and interpersonal management experience
  • Proven excellence in organizational management with ability to coach staff, manage and develop high performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Proficient at seeking, writing, and editing grants and managing major funding campaigns
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience
  • Positive experience in developing strong relationships with community partners
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors
  • Highly organized and deadline oriented
  • Proven cooperative partnership skills
  • Flexible and cooperative approach to problem solving
  • Maintains a positive attitude that encourages participation and enthusiasm
  • Respects other people’s viewpoints and skills; good listening and communication skills; willingness to compromise and collaborate
  • Values diversity and helps create an organizational culture that appreciates and respects differences
  • Displays passion, integrity, self-confidence, persuasiveness, decisiveness, and creativity
  • Preference for personal background in incarceration (family members) and in working with marginalized communities
