The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a unique global network of policy research centers, seeks a full-time research analyst or senior research analyst based in Washington, DC for a two-year position working with Dr. Rachel Kleinfeld on U.S. democracy, with a special focus on political and targeted violence in comparative international perspective.

The analyst will be responsible for coordinating a consortium of approximately 75 researchers around the country working on issues of U.S. political and targeted violence, including planning an annual conference, topic planning and management of monthly online meetings, note taking, intake management, meeting with researchers, and creating documents that move research into the public and policy domains; researching often contentious topics with validity and rigor; writing, editing, and proofreading work, co-writing articles and other publications, and engaging in original research and writing under your name while under the scholar’s direction; turning writing and data into attractive graphs and powerpoint decks that make clear points or tell stories; light website and social media assistance and amplification; and getting to know and understand the field of practitioners, journalists, philanthropists, and others who impact U.S. democracy and political/targeted violence, conducting outreach, and building databases to ensure that research has the greatest possible impact. The analyst will also assist with maintaining member ties, gauging interest areas and gaps, and expanding the research group, particularly looking to expand both background and ideological diversity. The analyst must be able to condense large volumes of information into memos with analytic clarity and use discernment to accurately assess information free of political or ideological pre-judgment in any direction.

The selected candidate will be chosen as either a research analyst or senior research analyst based on their educational background and experience. The position requires an undergraduate degree and 2+ years of work experience or a Master’s degree. Preferred candidates will have superior analytic and writing skills, strong organizational and management skills, high social skills and openness to engage individuals of diverse backgrounds and ideologies, basic graphic design/visual ability to create attractive graphs, power points, and other products, and basic knowledge and significant interest in issues of U.S. and global democracy and political/targeted violence and a desire to grow in this field. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to accurately analyze quantitative data – including understanding flawed methodologies – and would be able to undertake basic quantitative data analysis.

Candidates should have the ability to work with a manager who is not on-site, an energetic and can-do work style, and a willingness to follow the facts regardless of ideological or outcome preferences.
