Founded in 1883, Allen-Stevenson is a K-8 independent school for boys with an enrollment of 373 students. Located in the heart of New York City’s Upper East Side, the School is a joyful, inclusive community. Our urban setting affords many educational and cultural advantages. The School seeks a science and engineering teacher to teach to middle school grade levels and to work collaboratively with a team of science and engineering teachers across the disciplines. 

 

This full-time position starts on August 20, 2024, and is eligible for a complete benefits package. Compensation: $78,000-$98,000 commensurate with education and experience.

 

The Science and Engineering program fosters skills that are informed by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Using a social justice lens and an interdisciplinary approach, the science and engineering curriculum provides the boys with the necessary tools to become informed and active global citizens. Our students understand that solutions to our most pressing problems, such as climate change, demand broad perspectives. Our science and engineering labs and hydroponic greenhouse are environments where the boys participate in inquiry-based and project-based learning opportunities that emphasize real-world connections. The students identify ways to take action with their learning outcomes by participating in experiential education or by providing information, recommendations, and/or designed solutions to community members. 

 

Allen-Stevenson is fortunate to be able to incorporate up-to-date technology into our program, including a 1:1 laptop program for Grades 4 through 8, digital microscopes and probeware in science and engineering labs, and other such resources where appropriate.


Primary responsibilities include:

●      Teach a range of science and engineering classes in our Upper Division (grades 5 - 8)

●      Demonstrate familiarity with NGSS and how the standards align with your teaching approach

●      Develop engineering (using EDP) projects in collaboration with the science and engineering team and other disciplines

●      Demonstrate a commitment to working with students as they make real-world connections through their science and engineering studies

●      Be willing to be a part of a collaborative team as the science and engineering program continues to develop

●      Nurture and prioritize meaningful connections with students so they feel welcome, valued, understood and seen

●      Serve as a grade-level advisor and interact with parents as appropriate

●      Supervise clubs, class trips, daily recess and lunch duties

●      Use technology effectively and appropriately to enhance student learning in the classroom and for virtual lessons as necessary

●      Assess student performance using formative and summative tools, as well as rubrics, and provide regular academic updates,  grades and comments for report cards

●      Collaborate with division and team members with flexibility, creativity and humor to develop program and ensure student success

●      Communicate effectively and in a timely fashion, with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues


The ideal candidate will:

●      Have at least 1-3 years of elementary and/or middle school science and engineering teaching experience

●      Have an advanced degree in science or related field 

●      Show effective classroom management skills

●      Collaborate with division and team members with flexibility, creativity and humor to develop program and ensure student success

●      Have a strong developmental understanding of middle school students and enjoy teaching these ages

●     Consider, attend to, and prioritize the emotional components of learning, and develop teaching and assessment strategies that account for emotional components of learning

●      Adjust methods, content and assessments as needed to meet all student learning needs, academic and emotional, so every student has a chance to succeed
