The Opportunity

The East Bay Community Law Center seeks a Senior Institutional Giving Manager /or Institutional Giving Manager (IGM) to cultivate and sustain strategic partnerships with foundations, corporations, and other institutional donors on behalf of the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC). This position sits within a six-member Development and Communications Team. It requires an individual who is passionate about using their grant writing and other fundraising skills to advance EBCLC’s mission to promote racial justice through legal services and policy advocacy. We seek candidates with demonstrated experience working with philanthropic partners; a proven track record of successful grant writing; and who excel at strategically developing compelling proposals and cultivating and stewarding funder relationships.


The Senior Institutional Giving Manager or Institutional Giving Manager will play a critical role in raising funds annually for a $10M organization. They will be expected to actively prospect, write, and submit proposals to foundation and corporate donors, work closely with the Senior Data & Evaluation Manager to track programmatic goals and outcomes and write reports on grant deliverables to submit on a timely basis.

Following the onset of COVID-19, EBCLC is tending to the exacerbated socioeconomic crises that are disproportionately impacting people of color. The e Senior IGM or IGM will play a pivotal role in speaking truth to power by developing bold, nuanced messaging to our philanthropic partners to ensure that we can promptly and expertly provide necessary, life-changing legal services to our community. The fundraising carried out by this role is also pivotal in our ability to continue increasing salaries so that staff earn a dignified wage, in alignment with our core values and the market rate salaries for our industry.  

Primary Responsibilities:

• Grant Writing: Craft compelling letters of intent/inquiry (LOIs), full proposals, and reports to foundations and corporations that articulate the breadth and depth of EBCLC’s contributions. This includes developing and updating succinct yet effective one-pagers and concept notes on EBCLC’s work for interested and prospective philanthropic partners as needed;

• Grants Management: Manage the entire grant life cycle for a $2M-3M donor portfolio, from pre-award to post-award, ensuring timely submission of written narrative and budget proposals and reports. This entails working collaboratively with EBCLC’s Development Director, Executive Director, Finance Director, Deputy Directors, Program Directors, and other programmatic staff;

• Prospecting: Conduct detailed research, scan for open calls for proposals, and cultivate a strategy for pursuing new prospective foundations and corporate donors. This also includes leveraging staff and board connections and networks to cultivate and steward new relationships with foundations and corporations;

• External Meeting Preparation: Provide the Executive Director and Development Director with detailed briefs ahead of donor meetings that cover research on foundation representative(s), talking points on EBCLC, and strategy and insights for donor engagement 

• Tracking Revenue Goals: Track philanthropic donations internally to measure progress towards institutional giving revenue goal, as determined by the Executive Team;

Other Responsibilities:

• Maintain DonorPerfect (EBCLC’s current donor management database) to accurately track institutional donations and prospects

• Upkeep electronic files and records on all aspects of development activities;

• Send acknowledgment letters and tax receipts to institutional funders upon receiving a gift;

• Create donor lists to opt-in for organization-wide email blasts;

• Stay up-to-date with organizational wins, challenges, and opportunities by attending monthly meetings with each of our legal services programs;

• Actively participate in Development/Communications meetings, all staff meetings, and EBCLC-sponsored community and fundraising events;

• Occasionally, the Institutional Giving Manager may also work with the Government Contracts Officer to support the writing of government contract bids and the Communications Manager to support the successful publication of our Annual Report.


Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent additional experience; experience in the legal or policy advocacy sectors a plus

• A minimum of five years of fundraising/development experience, preferably in the non-profit sector; Senior status in this position requires a minimum of seven years of fundraising/development experience.

• Successful track record of cultivating and maintaining institutional giving relationships

• Dedicated to externally representing the stories of our clients with dignity, sensitivity, and respect;

• Strongly rooted in principles of racial justice with a passion for advancing equity and EBCLC’s mission to increase justice through advocacy and education. This includes remaining steadfast in clearly articulating to external stakeholders how structural racism impedes legal justice for communities of color, and why legal services and policy advocacy are critical in delivering justice;

• Solid understanding of the philanthropic sector (knowledge of the Bay Area philanthropic landscape is a plus) and ability to think strategically about how EBCLC can both successfully maintain and increase its revenue support from this sector;

• Excellent communication skills, including prowess in working cross-functionally between development, finance, and programmatic staff 

• Adept at using Microsoft Office programs. Interest in learning how to use LegalServer, our case management database, is critical. Experience in using Canva and other donor management software is preferred;

• General understanding of nonprofit finance and budgeting to be able to forecast philanthropic support and work with the Finance Director on budgeting and financial reporting to donors;

• Demonstrated ability to think at a big-picture level while also remaining detail-oriented;

• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be self-directed, but also to exercise judgment about when to involve the Executive Director, Deputy Directors, Program Directors, and/or other staff members.

Workplace Expectations:

Due to COVID-19, EBCLC has shifted its operations to a hybrid work environment. Staff may work from home or in the office, subject to safety protocols. The Institutional Giving Manager is expected to attend in-person meetings as needed to build internal and external relationships to succeed in their role, including donor meetings and community-wide events hosted by EBCLC. EBCLC will provide the necessary equipment to fulfill the job responsibilities while working from home. The Institutional Giving Manager may work from our office on Center Street in Downtown Berkeley if they so choose.
