Fistula Program Coordinator - Kiryandongo

Uganda Village Project (UVP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working with the people of Iganga & Bugweri Districts to facilitate community health and well-being in rural Uganda through improved access, education, and prevention. Throughout the history of UVP, the organization has supported such health areas as: nutrition, eye care, malaria, HIV/AIDs and STIs, family planning and reproductive health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and Obstetric Fistula.

As an international nonprofit organization, UVP works directly with community based organizations (CBOs) and local governments to utilize local knowledge and maximize community ownership. We work in partnership across sectors to include multiple stakeholders and ensure our work is sustainable and adapted to local needs. 

The Program Coordinator works closely with Program Managers and Assistant, Managing, and Executive (A/M/E) Directors to implement specific program activities and carry out tasks to arrange for these activities. The Program Coordinator is responsible for organizing activities through community and partner engagement. 


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Social Work & Social Administration, Community Development, or other related field (or relevant experience, preferred)
  • Nursing background highly desirable
  • 1-2 years of direct field experience with demonstrated increasing responsibility
  • Basic proficiency using technology (e.g. Gmail, WhatsApp, Word, Excel, Kobo Toolbox etc.) to do Word processing, emailing, simple accounting, spreadsheet analysis, etc. 
  • Strong organizational skills in order to manage activity timelines
  • Experience and comfort working with a collaborative and constructive peer group
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to a UVP’s mission
  • Self-motivated; ability to work in an autonomous environment
  • Working independently 
  • Willingness to be away from home for extended periods of time 
  • English fluency including strong writing skills 
  • Fluency in Runyankore/Rukiga, Runyoro/Rutooro


Responsibilities

Program Administration

  • Coordinate the delivery of program services and resources among multiple program activities to increase effectiveness and efficiency of program objectives
  • Execute program activities in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization and under the direction of the Program Manager or A/M/E Director
  • Provide detailed, weekly program updates to the Program Manager or A/M/E Director
  • Participate in the development and implementation of long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful program outcomes
  • Ensure program activities operate within policies and procedures of the organization
  • Responsible for the timely collection and continuous maintenance of program documentation on the participants of the program for MEL, fundraising, and external communications purposes according to the confidentiality/privacy policy of the organization
  • Provide feedback when requested for grant applications or reports in a timely manner
  • Meet deadlines of all tasks with little oversight from supervisor(s)
  • Mobilize logistics & resources (e.g. VHTs, sensitization supplies) for program activities
  • Perform any other tasks as may be assigned by the supervisor(s)

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • With assistance, record program activities on a weekly, quarterly, and annual basis
  • In collaboration with other staff members, utilize program analysis to consider improvements to programs to increase efficacy


Finance

  • Provide updated financial records (e.g. weekly finances/ledger) for the program in a timely manner to the Assistant/Managing/Executive Director.
  • Review, edit, and provide detailed, timely feedback on funding proposals for the program to ensure the continuous delivery of services
  • Keep detailed records and receipts of all program related expenditures to be submitted on a monthly basis to the A/M/ED.


The Program Coordinator should demonstrate competence in the following:

Value and respect donors who provide program funding by using funds and time efficiently and per the terms of the donation.

  • Communicate Effectively: Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques. Reply to electronic communication within 72 hours.
  • Creativity/Innovation/Flexibility: Comfort operating effectively in a changing environment. Able and willing to consult on possible programmatic improvements.
  • Foster Teamwork: Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Problem Solving/Decision Making: With consultation of the Program Manager or Managing Director, assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the organization. 
  • Organize and Plan: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information, and activities. Manage challenges in order to complete assigned work in a timely manner appropriate to an international organization.
  • Independence: Capability to work with little supervision, be able to identify tasks that need to be accomplished, and meet deadlines.


Working Conditions

  • Program Coordinators work in an office environment approximately 20% of the time and non-standard workplaces the other 80%.
  • Program Coordinators work a standard work week but will be required to work some evenings and weekends depending upon activity.
