OUR WORK

More than 38 million Americans lack reliable access to nutritious meals. Meanwhile, 108 billion pounds of food go uneaten in the U.S. - the equivalent of 40% of the country’s food supply. Rethink Food exists to bridge the gap between perfectly good food that goes to waste and the demand for meals that many of our food-insecure neighbors face. Through Rethink Certified, we partner with restaurants, kitchens, and corporations to provide nutritious, culturally celebrated meals to communities impacted by food insecurity - while using excess food whenever possible. Since 2017 Rethink Food has prepared 24+ million meals for local communities utilizing 2.5 million pounds of excess food.

ROLE SUMMARY

The Strategy & Analytics Extern will be an innovative, flexible individual who works closely with the CEO and the Executive Leadership Team to support the delivery of the most high-priority initiatives across the organization. This role develops data-driven insights, optimizes department processes, spearheads special projects, and is responsible for stewarding the strategic vision of the organization.

In addition to day-to-day responsibilities, the Extern will have the opportunity to learn more about the food system from many different perspectives: volunteering at Rethink’s commissary kitchen, riding along on a truck route, visiting our community organization and restaurant partners, and, if interested, spending a night working in a fine dining restaurant.

This is a temporary role from 6 months up to 1 year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support new strategic initiatives, including cross-functional programmatic changes.
  • Optimize business processes, and deep dive into departments to support project prioritization and best practices.
  • Develop data-driven business insights through analytics, financial modeling, resource forecasting, and requirements analyses.
  • Drive business decisions via data storytelling through dashboards, analytical memos, and key performance metrics.
  • Craft external communications for Board meetings, institutional and governmental grants, and funding pitches.
  • Support the development of internal communications by increasing transparency in decision-making across the organization, preparing all-staff content, and reviewing communications channels.
  • Work directly with the Chief of Staff and CEO on ad-hoc initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 - 3 years of experience in management consulting, investment banking, fast-paced startup, or related experience.
  • Strong track record of end-to-end ownership in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ability to spearhead critical initiatives that integrate quantitative and qualitative analyses to drive clear, communicable results.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to synthesize inputs and influence wide-scale projects across multiple levels and functions of an organization.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience collaborating with a multidisciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
  • Flexible and independent self-starter; ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Personal alignment to our core values of Kindness, Inventiveness, Vulnerability and Thoughtfulness.

What You Bring to the Table

Commitment to embodying our values of:

Inventiveness: At our core, we are relentlessly curious about solving problems. As our name suggests, we’re a team of creative thinkers, but we’re also hands-on doers, challenging norms with humility to find practical solutions that can create lasting change.

Vulnerability: Guided by an “always be better” mindset, we are a team that intentionally reflects on what we are doing well and where we need to improve. We hold ourselves and each other accountable, every day. No blame, no shame — we just want to be sure we’re always doing the right thing.

Thoughtfulness: Our vision for a nourished and thriving world starts with nourished and thriving individuals in each of our communities. Our work is centered on the needs of the people that bring our communities to life. We don’t pretend to have all of the answers. We are committed to listening and learning in order to identify and scale solutions that ensure stable and reliable access to healthy food for all so each and every community can thrive.

Kindness: At Rethink, we show up every day with empathy and compassion and believe everyone should be treated with dignity. Kindness goes a long way — we are all about just being kind
