About Project 180 Sarasota, Inc.

Founded in 2008 by Barbara Richards, Project 180 Sarasota, Inc. (Project 180) addresses the need for prisoner reentry services in Sarasota County. Barbara envisioned an organization dedicated to helping formerly incarcerated individuals rebuild their lives, aiming to reduce poverty, homelessness, and unemployment and improve community safety.

Project 180 remains committed to its mission, with an approximate annual budget of $600,000, assets surpassing $1 million, and a dedicated staff of four. The organization partners with state and local corrections agencies and local nonprofits to facilitate clients’ stability in six critical areas: recovery, housing, employment, financial matters, relationships, and healthcare. Key initiatives include the Residential Program for men in recovery and the First Week Out Program, an initiative to assist men and women returning to Sarasota County from state prison. Project 180 also conducts educational programs in the Sarasota County Correctional Facility, formerly the Sarasota County Jail, and hosts the nation’s only annual lecture series on prisoner reentry.
