40% of all food produced in the United States is wasted each year.

In addition to costing the U.S. $160 billion dollars each year, food waste squanders water, depletes soil, wastes fossil fuels and adds greatly to the world's carbon footprint.

When the resources used to grow, process, and transport are considered, 25% of our freshwater and 4% of our oil is used for food that never gets eaten.

Food is the single largest component of solid waste in municipal landfills and incinerators in the U.S. Rotting food creates methane which is 25 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide and currently accounts for 23% of our total methane emissions

49 million (that is 1 out of every 6) Americans struggle to put food on the table. 1 out of every 4 children in our nation doesn’t know where there next meal will come from. If just 20% of wasted food were captured, it would be enough to feed 25 million Americans, cutting our hunger rates in half.

In a time of increasing consciousness around worldwide hunger and environmental protection, there is enormous opportunity to galvanize action to reduce our national food waste habit. Now is the time for Food Shift.

Food Shift is working to create a more just and sustainable food system. We believe by trimming our food waste we can feed the hungry, create jobs, combat global warming, conserve natural resources and improve the ethical conscience of our society.
