Semillas Life

Dear Idealist team,

We are Semillas Life, a nonprofit organization working for the economic and social development of different communities in the Peruvian Amazon. We focus on Education, Health, Environment, Tourism and Cultural Exchange.

We are located in Puerto Inca, Huanuco, Peru.

One big problem in this area of the Peruvian Amazon is that people are destroying the Amazon Rainforest. One of the main reasons is the lack of opportunities. Most of the people are farmers and do not make enough money selling their agricultural products. Consequently, many people are doing illegal activities such as illegal gold mining and illegal logging. They are contaminating the rivers with chemicals to find gold and destroying the Amazon Rainforest to get woods. The worst thing is that few years ago was only locals doing artisanal mining or illegally using small machines, now the local people are renting their own land to gold mining companies. These big companies are using big diggers and destroying the Amazon Rainforest.

It is very important for us to find mechanisms for boosting the economy of less privileges communities in the province of Puerto Inca. We believe that working together with these communities in developing different skills for its people and creating new job opportunities, not only will help to reduce poverty but to reduce activities that are destroying the Amazon Rainforest.

Protecting the Amazon should be a global commitment because of it incalculable biological and ecological value.
