Judy is an internationally recognized disability advocate who served in the Clinton and Obama Administrations and co-founded the first Independent Living Center and the World Institute on Disability. She is (Delete was) a leading pioneer of the Disability Rights Movement beginning in the 1970's and continues to work tirelessly to improve the lives of Disabled people through legal and social channels in the U.S. and around the world. She is featured in the documentary "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution," a 2020 award winning Netflix documentary film, directed by James LeBrecht and Nicole Newnham, produced by the Obama Higher Ground Production. In 2020, she published her memoir "Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist" alongside Kristin Joiner. The Young Adult version, “Rolling Warrior: The Incredible, Sometimes Awkward, True Story of a Rebel on Wheels, Who Helped Spark A Revolution” was published in 2021. She produces The Heumann Perspective, a podcast and YouTube channel that aim to share the beauty and diversity of the disability community. Judy is a sought after speaker for companies, nonprofits and media outlets. Her presentations are focused on advancing the inclusion of disabled people through addressing ableism, learning about disability history and proactively bringing the voices of disabled people centrally in their work. Judy also serves on several boards including Human Rights Watch and the American Association of People with Disabilities. She is seeking an Executive Assistant to support this work.

The International Disability Rights Fellowship is designed to offer significant networking opportunities and experience in national and global-level activities related to policy and legislative development, advocacy, and technical assistance. This fellowship is envisioned to be mutually beneficial; the fellow will benefit from the experiences, expertise, and exposure during the fellowship period and will contribute to the advancement and education of disability rights as civil and human rights domestically and globally.
