MicroEnergy Credits is a social enterprise which links microfinance institutions to the carbon markets when they lend for clean energy. When a microentrepreneur takes a loan for a solar lighting system or an improved cookstove, it creates a carbon emission reduction because it replaces dirty fuels like kerosene, wood, charcoal or coal. MEC purchases these carbon emissions reductions and then sells them on the carbon markets. The microfinance institutions can then use the revenues to scale up the clean energy program or can pass the savings along to their client in the form of reduced interest rates, free battery replacements or other benefits.
