Community Health and Development Fellow (With Stipend)

Community Health and Development Fellow at Hospitalito Atitlán

*A monthly living stipend commensurate with experience is provided*

Hospitalito Atitlán is a nonprofit community hospital serving over 75,000 Maya on Lake Atitlán's Southern Shores. The hospital provides a full-range of preventive and clinical health services with an emphasis on women and children and has the only 24/7 emergency and surgical obstetrical care within a two-hour radius.

This position is based out of the Development Office as part of a team that includes individuals with years of experience with Hospitalito Atitlán. The responsibilities are varied and important, and require someone who is flexible, professional, and organized. Below is a list of some of the desired skills and experience, and some of the more established responsibilities for individuals in this position. This list is by no means exhaustive, and is always subject to change as the Hospitalito grows and changes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Grants and Reports

Collaborate with the Director of Development and Community Projects team on grant applications for new projects, analyze data and create reports for current projects.

Community Health Programs

The fellow will be trained in all these skills before going out into the community. The fellow will assist with the community health programs that are coordinated through the development office, including the Diabetes and Nutrition Programs, the “Día de Salud” and “Día de Mujeres Embarazadas” programs, which bring medical staff and supplies into the rural communities. Fellow may perform patient-intake at rural clinics, blood glucose screening for diabetic patients or give educational talks about diabetes or nutrition.

Maternal Infant Program Management

This program links sponsors with pregnant women and new mothers of minimal resources to provide prenatal tests and vitamins, prenatal and postnatal counseling, free clinical visits, the option to give birth in the Hospitalito, and well child visits. Hospitalito’s social worker manages the program and the fellow is responsible for managing contributions and communication between the sponsors and families. Pre-pandemic, the fellow assisted at monthly talks with the sponsored women’s group.

Surgical Team Management and Patient Translation

The Hospitalito hosts a number of surgical teams for brief visits or “jornadas” throughout the year. The fellow assists with surgical team management and translates for patients that do not speak Spanish.

Inbox and Donation Management

The fellow is responsible for responding to these emails or forwarding them to the appropriate party. The fellows also maintains donor database, Network for Good.

Newsletter and Annual Campaigns

Fellow assists in the production and design of newsletters (monthly-quarterly) and annual report

Social Media Management

The fellow contributes to Hospitalito social media content, and may be tasked with photographing events and interviewing staff and community members to get material to publish on social media. 

Hospital Tours and Visitors

Fellow conducts tours of the hospital and aids with logistics for groups of visitors. Tours are typically in English, and occasionally in Spanish.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English, including public speaking
  • Intermediate to advanced Spanish
  • Bachelor or advanced degree with interest in Public Health
  • Adaptability and organization
  • Critical thinking
  • Interest or experience living in an indigenous community
  • Initiative to independently take on and complete projects
  • Adaptability with respect to living conditions and situation

Start Date/Commitment

Start date of Spring/Summer 2024, commitment of one year (exact dates negotiable)

Monthly stipend commensurate with experience provided
