Position Title: Member of Potential Energy’s Board of Directors

Duration: 12-month volunteer position

Location: Remote, with occasional in-person meetings for those based in Northern California

Type: 5-10 hours / month of service required

Compensation: This is a volunteer position

The Company:

Half the world – over 3 billion people – cook their daily meals over an open fire. Smoke from cooking fires kills 4 million people each year…that’s more than AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis combined. Preparing meals over unimproved stoves causes massive deforestation and is a major contributor to black carbon emissions. Potential Energy, Inc. (www.potentialenergy.org) is a non-profit social enterprise based in California with operations in a number of markets in Sub-Saharan Africa working to solve this problem.

The Opportunity:

At Potential Energy, we are in the process of transferring the majority of our operations to East Africa, under the leadership of our Managing Director based in Kampala, Uganda. In doing so, we’re shifting operational responsibility from a (formerly) US-based team to a field-based team. To support these efforts, we are building up a strong, highly-involved Board of Directors.

Potential Energy’s Board Members serve a hands-on oversight and monitoring function. They are passionate about volunteering their time in support of clean energy and social entrepreneurship in Africa. Through their service, they work directly with staff and other board members to further Potential Energy’s work in East Africa.

The Role & Commitment:

Potential Energy board members commit to 5-10 hours of service each month, including monthly phone and annual in-person meetings. The collective role of Potential Energy’s Board of Directors is listed below; we are interested in hearing from people who are interested in, and could contribute meaningfully, to one or more of these responsibilities:

• Oversee and Approve Strategic Direction of the Organization
• Review financial statements
• Ensure good governance, and compliance with By-Laws
• Contribute to Business Development efforts
• Directly and indirectly support fundraising efforts
• Speak on behalf of the organization
• Review and Approve Contracts
• Manage communications and messaging
• Assist in refining our business and financial models
