Observation in the Caribbean of Manatees, Turtles, Monkeys, Birds and Beach Cleaning.

Come and join us for an unforgettable experience, the only requirement is adventurous blood!

The project Naturaleza de Pacuare was founded by local people and is also managed by them. Our goal is to preserve the ecosystem in a sustainable way, to support the biodiversity in our country and to protect endangered animals. With the help and cooperation of the local population, we have succeeded in creating an atmosphere in which everyone feels comfortable and welcome. With the knowledge of doing something good and valuable, everyone should have the opportunity to leave a lasting impression on the world.

At Naturaleza Pacuare we know that it doesn't take much to change the world a little. Since our founding in 2019, we have been determined to drive change for the better.

It is a great concern for us not only to provide ecological help, but also to give our volunteers a great opportunity to get to know the everyday life of Costa Rica.

We observe manatees through their migration and behaviour. Manatees in Costa Rica have become a national symbol, however, they’re not specifically protected. Manatees don’t have any natural predators, their only threat has been humans. Our aim is to collect enough information and knowledge about them in our area to be able to better understand and protect this amazing species.

We also observe sea turtles, more specifically leatherback turtles, green sea turtles, and hawksbill turtles. We patrol the beach during the night to make sure the turtles lay their eggs without problems. The eggs then are taken to a hatchery where they stay until they hatch. It is important to patrol the beach during the night to make sure the poachers can’t steal the eggs. Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are also in danger themselves, we have to make sure to stay with the from the moment they come to the shore to the moment they have safely entered the sea again.

You can also observe the monkeys and their behavior in their natural habitat, as well as observe a variety of birds, as well as other animals in the area.

Come and join us for an unforgettable experience, the only requirement is adventurous blood!

¿Cómo llegar?

The best and cheapest way to arrive is by taking the bus from San Jose to Bataan. You can catch it at Grand Terminal del Caribe in San José center and buy your tickets directly there. The bus leaves at 2, 4 or 6 PM. Costs about 4000 Costa Rican colones. Then you catch the taxi from Bataan bus station (which is already pre-organized and waiting for you) to the boat dock for 10 000 colones. To finish off your journey, a 25-minute long, unbelievable trip by boat on the river which costs 35 000 colones, already including your departure ride. The whole trip all together takes about 4,5 hours.

If you prefer a quicker and more comfortable option, we can arrange a private taxi from San José up to the boat dock, it has a cost of $120. By car (depending on the traffic), you can get to Bataan in about 3 hours.

You can join us all year long, any day of the week.
