ABOUT JUMPSTART
Jumpstart is a national early education organization that recruits and trains volunteers to work with preschool children in low-income neighborhoods. Through a proven curriculum, these children develop the language and literacy skills they need to be ready for school, setting them on a path to close the achievement gap before it is too late. Join us to work toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Learn more at www.jstart.org.
ABOUT THE POSITION
By the age of 3, children born into low-income families hear roughly 30 million fewer words than their more affluent peers. That’s where Jumpstart comes in. Jumpstart for Young Children needs volunteers to provide reading and tutoring support to Pre-Kindergarten students in Pre-Kindergarten centers across Washington, DC to work towards closing the kindergarten readiness gap. You will work in small groups with students using Jumpstart activities that are designed to focus specifically on building the key skills that research shows are critical in supporting children’s language, literacy, and social-emotional development. We are looking for reliable AmeriCorps members to work with students for about 30-35 hours a week from Monday to Friday in the preschool space. No teaching experience required. You must be a current university or college student, pass a background check, and commit to completing 300 hours of service by August 16, 2024.
Jumpstart Corps members have the unique opportunity to inspire young children to learn, serve in a local community, collaborate with others on a team, and build professional skills. All Corps members receive high quality training to help them implement Jumpstart’s outcome-based program, promote children’s school success, and build family engagement. This position serves vulnerable populations, i.e. preschool children. Earn a $1,459.26 Education Award at the end of your service after completing 300 hours and a stipend of $4,500 before taxes.
