AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a National Service Opportunity - not a job or internship. VISTA is an anti-poverty program designed to provide needed resources to nonprofit organizations and public agencies to increase their capacity to lift communities out of poverty.
The Mountain Home Montana VISTA connect families with basic essentials so they can have the capacity to invest their limited financial resources in improving their family’s health, stability, and outcomes. The cost of living in Missoula makes it difficult for families to acquire the essentials they need at an affordable price. Mountain Home Montana receives calls daily from families or service providers working with local families requesting basic needs, such as diapers, baby clothes, hygiene products, home supplies, etc. because families cannot afford these items. Mountain Home Montana provides housing, case management, therapy, education, employment support, childcare, and more to moms aged 16 – 29. They create a network of mothers to connect them to a supportive group of peers and provide wraparound support for them to provide for their families. By connecting families with zero to low-cost resources and supplies, they can use the money they save on other investments that may help them move out of poverty. This VISTA project will move low-income families with children out of poverty by making essentials accessible and affordable, resulting in families having the opportunity to invest their limited financial resources into improving their family’s health, stability, and outcomes.
