Descripción

Our Generation Voluntary Organization offers a chance for students studying Midwifery to volunteer in large hospitals or rural setting as an elective in Ghana, Africa. We have great need for Midwifery school electives and midwife interns. Students gain valuable medical experience for a short time although students can stay for longer periods of time. This is to get to know the local system better, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures and build stronger relationships with local staff. Most students will work with pregnant women who suffer from a variety of complications on a daily basis. Some of these are Malaria and Typhoid. For students coming from outside the country, please update and receive your vaccinations. Midwifery is different in Ghana that what you would be used to at home. Local hospitals and clinics are excellent places to learn and improve your skills. This work is both challenging and rewarding.

Travel tips

You should arrive into Kotoka International Airport in Accra (airport code ACC). You will be met at the airport by one of our staffs who will be holding a named sign. He/she will take you to your accommodation where you will spend the rest of your day at leisure.

Can I use this program as part of a university or college placement?

It is certainly possible to use one of OGVO’s programs as part of your university or college placement. Project staff can sign off any paperwork required by your course tutors. OGVO regularly receives medical, childcare, psychology and nursing placement students at our projects in Ghana and we have ties with some of the leading universities.

If you’re a course tutor and would like further information about how one of OGVO’s programs could meet the placement requirements for your degree course then please contact us directly.

A typical day on the Midwifery Internship in Ghana

Your work day will usually start around 8am and finish at 2pm, Monday to Friday. The hospital works on shifts, so you can stay later if your supervisor approves it.

You can enjoy a well-deserved lunch break around 12. At this time, you can break out your packed lunch or use the time to rest your feet and have a late lunch back at your host family.

You’ll spend the day observing qualified midwives as they consult with patients in the maternity ward. This will give you the chance to see the different conditions pregnant women in Ghana face. Depending on your qualifications, you may even be able to witness a birth in the delivery room.

When you get back to your host family, spend time getting to know them and their culture over a deliciously home cooked Ghanaian meal such as jollof rice.

Ghana has many interesting sites to see and explore. In your spare time, you can take a hike through the countryside, get a tan on the beach, or enjoy a more urban feel when visiting the Ashanti capital city of Kumasi.
