The Posse Foundation Virtual Program: 2024 Writing Coach Volunteer Opportunity

For over 30 years, the Posse Foundation has recruited young people with extraordinary potential. Students earn full-tuition, merit-based leadership scholarships to attend our partner college and universities. Our program trains these students and places them in a supportive, multicultural group of ten students (Posses) at university. Our Posse Scholars graduate at a rate of 90 percent and our Alumni are recognized leaders in the workforce.  Before they attend college Scholars must attend 8 months worth of workshops that Posse Calls Pre-Collegiate Training.

The Writing Program is a critical component of Posse Scholars' Pre-Collegiate Training experience. Writing Coaches work as volunteers to virtually assist Posse Scholars in honing their writing skills, in partnership with fellow coaches and a Posse staff member. The responsibilities of a Writing Coach volunteer include: 

1. Meeting individually via Zoom with 3-4 Scholars on a one-time basis to identify their writing strengths, provide tailored feedback, and identify areas for improvement

2. Providing thoughtful and constructive comments to Scholars on their writing assignments 

3. Meeting via Zoom with a Posse staff member to prepare for the writing workshop

Qualities/Qualifications we are looking for in a Writing Coach are: 

• Professional or significant experience in writing 
• Ability to work effectively with a group 
• Ability to work well with youth 
• Ability to provide clear and concise feedback on student writing 
• Bachelor’s degree required 
• Time flexibility

To volunteer for the program, prospective Coaches must sign up directly with Posse Virtual, either through this form (preferred) or you may email imohu@possefoundation.org. Coaches will go through the orientation process, which will be watching a 20 minute video. Orientation completion is a mandatory requirement if you would like to volunteer as a writing coach. 

2024 Writing Coaches will be needed for the week of May 13th. The exact times vary based on the day(s) you sign up for, but options will range between 4pm-8pm ET with a 2-hour volunteer window Monday-Thursday.
