Brú is a center for environment and sustainability near the crossroads to the West, South and North of Iceland. The centre is in the area of Hrutafjordur which a 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra. In the neighbourhood you can find pure and unspoiled nature, beaches full of driftwood, Snæfellsnes peninsula, glaciers in the highlands, waterfalls, strong rivers, canyons and craters. The purpose of the centre is to protect the nature in the area and to raise awareness of sustainability among the locals and the visitors who are coming to the area. This project has a variety of activities. However, our main activity is Beach Cleaning, as our goal is to clean the entire Icelandic coastline. Last year we cleaned almost 800 km and removed about 95 tons of waste from the shores.
We work with the local community and forestry associations as well as helping with the reforestation of the areas nearby. Some days, when the weather conditions are not suitable, we will focus on renovation work: painting, or fixing things around and inside the house.
We will upcycle garbage into art! While creating bookshelves out of driftwood or designing a chair with old tires and nets, your imagination is the limit!
Our work will depend on the weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. Working hours are about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week.
From September to November, when the forecast for the Auroras Borealis (Northern lights) is favourable, we will go for Aurora hunting!
The project is a way to enjoy an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while they are exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning.

Cadip volunteer project review:
"I had an incredible time in Iceland in August, it was my first time doing a Cadip volunteer program and it was absolutely amazing, rewarding, challenging and fun. The nature was breathtaking and I enjoyed talking to people from all over the world and immersing myself in a new local culture. I enjoyed getting to know the values, traditions and daily routine of locals and expanding my knowledge of other cultures and ideals." Maia N.
