ART FOR THE COMMUNITY “MUSIC, DANCE AND DRAMA AT KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP IN KENYA

Introduction;

-FAULU PRODUCTIONS is a nonprofit community-based organization founded in 2015 in Kakuma refugee camp with a mission of promoting youths' talents, creating a safe, sustainable living that enables social change, and education for marginalized communities; Empowerment to vulnerable.

-Our overall development objective is to establish community-based institutions for sustainable community development by providing free education and livelihood opportunities to both refugees and host communities through our four major programs: education, Community Empowerment, Permaculture, and Environment.

-Our organization has its historical root in this particular activity “Music, Dance, and Drama” starting from the year 2015 up to 2019 when we used to dramatize and offer skills to youths on the same and film producing.

Problem Statment,

The major problem or challenge that this project is aiming to solve is the shortage and lack of music and drama training institutions where the youth could be taught how to nurture their musical talents and view it as a life career that needs development for income generation rather than taking it as a leisure.

Secondly, within the Kakuma refugee camp we have got several youths who do not have access to study, we have realized how better it is to start the initiative of the Music and drama project to provide an opportunity to anyone interested in it a music career journey starting.

Furthermore, within the Kakuma refugee camp we have got a considerable number of school dropouts many of them have become desperate, behold some of these adolescents have a passion for music and drama training, thus the starting of this program is a nice opportunity for them to pursue this career and make their lives hopeful and successful.

Project Objective(s);

-Developing an analytical, creative, and intuitive understanding of music as a cultural language.

-Promoting refugee youths' aspirations and artistic integrity through music performance.

-Providing an opportunity for the youth interested in music to explore sound, rhythm, beat, tone, and body movements.

-Promoting youth social relationships, developing their identity, and revealing their personality traits.

-Providing a way for youth to express and explore their feelings and emotions.

-Understanding the importance of music therapy as a tool for healing:

-Shifting one’s attention from problems to solutions through music and drama.

-Offering rhythmic structure for relaxation and breathing.

-Helping the music fans visualize a positive image that evokes pleasure and happiness, mood changes, and a deep state of achievement relaxation.

The long-term aim of this program is to transform the lives of young people through music power and create job opportunities for the youth within and beyond the camp through their talents.

Volunteer Duty and Responsibilities;

-Ability to teach using various dance styles and methodologies from beginner to advanced level.

-Teaching acting skills, such as voice and movement, to students in a classroom setting

-Conducting acting classes that help students develop their skills and improve their knowledge of the industry

-Develop dance curriculums and prepare lesson plans.

-Ability to communicate with a diverse group of teachers and students.

-Engage, encourage, and motivate students to reach their goals.

-Evaluate student performance and make recommendations for improvement.

-Conduct group and private lessons as required.

-Provide a fun and creative environment.

-Keep up to date in your discipline and implement any changes to the dance routines and curriculum as needed.

-Evaluating student progress and providing feedback on technique and performance

-Teaching general styles of music.

-Building relationships and mentoring students.
