Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site

  • Sobre Nós

Bennington Battlefield preserves the site of a Revolutionary War battle fought in Walloomsac, NY. A detachment from an invading British army made up of leased, professional German troops and other auxiliaries was opposed by militia from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. The battle was fought in two engagements on August 16, 1777 and resulted in a decisive victory for the patriot forces under General John Stark. As a result, the British army suffered irreplaceable losses and failed to gather the supplies needed for a timely push on Albany. British General John Burgoyne later surrendered on October 17, 1777 after the Battles of Saratoga.

We offer a variety of educational tours and programming to the general public regarding the events of the battle, the American Revolution, and all-things 18th century New York. As we draw closer to both the nation's 250th and our battles 250th anniversary, we are increasing our programming and expanding our reach to include a diverse group of visitors interested in preserving their local history. Our hope is to share the significance of this important battle with visitors while raising awareness for historic preservation of our local history and historic landscapes.
