    Descrição

    Lead Accountant, Part-Time

    Arlington, VA (Hybrid)

    3 Days per Week

    $80,000 to $85,000 annually

A high-impact accounting role with real ownership and a schedule that respects your life

If you’re an experienced accountant who knows how to run the numbers, close the books, and keep things clean without constant oversight, this role gives you the space to do that work at a high level, without the demands of a full-time schedule.

At the Air & Space Forces Aid Society, your work directly supports Airmen, Guardians, and their families. This is not abstract accounting. Every report, reconciliation, and audit you touch connects back to real people navigating real challenges.

When military families faced financial uncertainty during the recent government shutdown, when a typhoon impacted Guam, and when tornadoes affected communities in Oklahoma, we stepped in with immediate support. That is the work behind the numbers.

As the official charity of the United States Air Force and Space Force, we have served military families since 1942, providing emergency financial assistance, education support, and community programs grounded in trust and accountability. Our reach extends across more than 70 Air Force and Space Force installations nationwide.

This role is designed for someone who wants to stay sharp, stay relevant, and stay impactful, without working five days a week.

This is a part-time role by design, not a stepping stone. We are looking for someone who wants to take full ownership of the work and stay in that rhythm, rather than someone planning to transition into a full-time role in the near term.

    What You’ll Own

This is not a support role. You will take ownership of core accounting functions and help ensure the financial integrity of the organization.

    You will:

      • Own monthly cash reconciliations and maintain accurate financial records
      • Prepare and review journal entries and support a clean, timely month-end close
      • Ensure accuracy across the balance sheet and income statement
      • Oversee accounts payable activity and weekly payment cycles
      • Monitor banking activity and identify discrepancies early
      • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
      • Support internal and grant reporting
      • Prepare for audit and respond directly to auditor requests
      • Analyze budget versus actuals and flag variances
      • Supervise and guide the Staff Accountant
      • Partner across teams to keep financial processes tight and reliable

    Schedule

This is a structured part-time role:

Tuesday and Thursday onsite in Crystal City, Arlington

    Wednesday remote

    3 days per week

    What You Bring and Own

You’re comfortable owning accounting work end to end and keeping things accurate without constant oversight. You know what a clean close looks like, and you take pride in getting there consistently.

Strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting

Hands-on experience managing month-end close, including reconciliations, journal entries, and financial review

Experience working with external auditors and supporting audit requests with clear, organized documentation

Proficiency with accounting and financial tools, including platforms such as Bill.com, Divvy, or similar systems

Advanced Excel skills and the ability to analyze and validate financial data

High attention to detail and disciplined follow-through

Ability to manage deadlines independently within a structured, part-time schedule

    Sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism

A collaborative approach and comfort working across teams

    Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
      • 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience
      • Direct experience supporting audits and financial reporting
      • Experience supervising or mentoring staff is a plus
      • Nonprofit experience is preferred but not required

    Why This Role Works

This role is built for someone who:

      • Wants meaningful work without a full-time schedule
      • Prefers ownership over constant oversight
      • Is confident in their accounting judgment and execution
      • May be stepping out of a full-time role, consulting, or building a portfolio career
      • You’ll stay close to the work, close to leadership, and close to impact, without being stretched across five days a week.

    Equal Opportunity

We are committed to a workplace free from unlawful discrimination. All qualified applicants will be considered without regard to protected characteristics under applicable law.

Applications may be reviewed using technology to identify relevant qualifications, but every candidate is ultimately reviewed by a member of our team.
