Social Media Content Creator and Event Assistant

    Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra (WHCO)

Part-Time, Non-Exempt Reports to: Media Director and Event Coordinator

    About WHCO

The Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra is a professional classical music ensemble founded in 2015, serving Upper Manhattan with 20+ concerts annually. Our programming spans MainStage concerts, Family and Relaxed Concerts, Storytime with the Symphony, our Summer Picnic Concert series, and Sound Bridges community performances. We are a musician-led nonprofit committed to cultivating meaningful connections in Upper Manhattan through exemplary classical music performances and innovative educational programming.

    Position Summary

We seek a creative, digitally fluent Social Media & Events Assistant to grow WHCO's online presence and support our concert operations. This role is primarily focused on content creation and social media management — capturing the energy of live performances, building audience engagement, and telling WHCO's story across platforms. Secondarily, this person will support event coordination and on-site operations as needed, occasionally stepping in to assist or substitute for our Event Coordinator.

    Key Responsibilities

Social Media & Digital Content (90%)

    • Create and schedule engaging content for Instagram and Facebook — performances, behind-the-scenes moments, musician spotlights, community stories, and event promotion
    • Capture photos and video at concerts for social media, press, and archival use.
    • Maintain a consistent posting cadence and respond to audience engagement.
    • Track analytics and provide growth reports
    • Organize and archive event media
    • Support fundraising campaign promotion

    Event Support (10%)

    • Assist Event Coordinator with on-site operations including setup/breakdown, guest check-in, wayfinding, and accessibility support
    • Substitute for Event Coordinator in a support capacity when needed, including supervising volunteers, communicating event flow issues to staff, and collecting attendee contact information for development purposes

    Qualifications

Required: 1–2 years social media and/or event support experience (internships count) • Strong content creation instincts and visual storytelling skills • Must own a high-quality smartphone (recent iPhone or equivalent) capable of producing photo and video content suitable for press and archival use • Familiarity with Instagram/Facebook and content best practices • Strong writing skills • Experience with social media scheduling tools (Buffer or similar) • Available evenings/weekends • Ability to lift 30 lbs and stand for extended periods • Enthusiasm for classical music and WHCO's mission

Preferred: Nonprofit arts experience • Graphic design (Canva) • Video editing (CapCut/Reels) • Spanish language skills • Trained musical ear with the ability to identify and capture high-quality musical moments in live and recorded classical performance

    Schedule & Compensation

    • Remote work: Content creation and calendar management: 2–3 hours/week, maximum 12 hours/month at $25/hour
    • On-site coverage: Full concerts (MainStage, Family, Run-Outs): $100 per event (~7 annually) Outreach concerts (Storytime, Summer Picnic Concert series): $75 per event (~7 annually)
    • Estimated Year 1 total: $4,825

    Why WHCO?

    • Work alongside professional musicians performing at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Broadway, and more
    • Gain hands-on nonprofit arts administration and digital marketing experience
