Social Media Content Creator and Event Assistant

About WHCO
The Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra is a professional classical music ensemble founded in 2015, serving Upper Manhattan with 20+ concerts annually. Our programming spans MainStage concerts, Family and Relaxed Concerts, Storytime with the Symphony, our Summer Picnic Concert series, and Sound Bridges community performances. We are a musician-led nonprofit committed to cultivating meaningful connections in Upper Manhattan through exemplary classical music performances and innovative educational programming.
Position Summary
We seek a creative, digitally fluent Social Media & Events Assistant to grow WHCO's online presence and support our concert operations. This role is primarily focused on content creation and social media management — capturing the energy of live performances, building audience engagement, and telling WHCO's story across platforms. Secondarily, this person will support event coordination and on-site operations as needed, occasionally stepping in to assist or substitute for our Event Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
Social Media & Digital Content (90%)
- Create and schedule engaging content for Instagram and Facebook — performances, behind-the-scenes moments, musician spotlights, community stories, and event promotion
- Capture photos and video at concerts for social media, press, and archival use.
- Maintain a consistent posting cadence and respond to audience engagement.
- Track analytics and provide growth reports
- Organize and archive event media
- Support fundraising campaign promotion
Event Support (10%)
- Assist Event Coordinator with on-site operations including setup/breakdown, guest check-in, wayfinding, and accessibility support
- Substitute for Event Coordinator in a support capacity when needed, including supervising volunteers, communicating event flow issues to staff, and collecting attendee contact information for development purposes
Qualifications
Required: 1–2 years social media and/or event support experience (internships count) • Strong content creation instincts and visual storytelling skills • Must own a high-quality smartphone (recent iPhone or equivalent) capable of producing photo and video content suitable for press and archival use • Familiarity with Instagram/Facebook and content best practices • Strong writing skills • Experience with social media scheduling tools (Buffer or similar) • Available evenings/weekends • Ability to lift 30 lbs and stand for extended periods • Enthusiasm for classical music and WHCO's mission
Preferred: Nonprofit arts experience • Graphic design (Canva) • Video editing (CapCut/Reels) • Spanish language skills • Trained musical ear with the ability to identify and capture high-quality musical moments in live and recorded classical performance
Schedule & Compensation
- Remote work: Content creation and calendar management: 2–3 hours/week, maximum 12 hours/month at $25/hour
- On-site coverage: Full concerts (MainStage, Family, Run-Outs): $100 per event (~7 annually) Outreach concerts (Storytime, Summer Picnic Concert series): $75 per event (~7 annually)
- Estimated Year 1 total: $4,825
