    Streetwork Project is an innovative outreach-counseling program for homeless youth in Harlem, which utilizes a harm reduction approach. Under this umbrella, services include counseling, sexual health and HIV prevention, case management, concrete drop-in services such as meals, clothing, showers and personal hygiene and harm reduction supplies, groups, legal services, and medical and mental healthcare. Safe Horizon reaches young people where they are – on the streets, and in their communities. Streetwork provides immediate, practical assistance to youth in need, while providing a stable, non-judgmental setting to address and explore issues of violence, daily living services (food, shower, respite), triage counseling, recreational activities and support groups.

    The Program Assistant, Streetwork Drop-In will work with Safe Horizon’s Streetwork Uptown site, at ensuring successful delivery of the above-named components via providing administrative and programmatic support to program staff.

    Responsibilities:

    • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients
    • Maintain and disseminate petty cash; maintain records for petty cash, including check-out receipt book; reconcile petty cash at least monthly
    • Maintain fiscal operations, including preparation of payment requests, purchase orders, credit card reconciliations, and other fiscal administrative responsibilities in a timely manner
    • Maintain, disseminate and reconcile metro cards
    • Communicate with staff office supply needs, order office supplies, and organize and maintain the staff office supply area
    • Monitor office technology and equipment, including fax, copier, shredder & ID machine, including coordinating repair and replacement when necessary
    • Point person for Information Technology related issues for the site and follow up on service desk requests
    • Point person for facilities related issues and follow up on FPM (Facilities and Property Management) requests
    • Pick up & deliver inter-office mail and messenger services between site and main administrative offices
    • Maintain overall organization of staff area, including mailboxes, storage/filing
    • Maintain closed client charts and prepare files and client charts for archive

    Secondary Job Functions:

    • Assist with managing events in the Drop-In Center, monitor entrance to the program, oversee concrete support to clients, and/or serve meals, and coverage of the front desk/reception area
    • Engagement of youth into program structure (harm reduction philosophy, rules, mutual respect)
    • Facilitate access to daily living needs (food, clothes, hygiene supplies, space to rest) as needed
    • Attend weekly staff meetings
    • Update site staff directories, site safety phone trees, etc.
    • Participate in weekly supervision
    • Attend monthly cross site staff meetings and participate in group process meetings
    • Other programmatic and administrative support as required or assigned

    Qualifications:

    • Strong office organization and management skills
    • Strong computer skills and proficiencies in MicroSoft Office
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to interact with diverse individuals, including direct services staff, supervisors, administrative staff, and clients
    • Demonstrated reliability and efficiency at completing tasks and follow-through
    • Compassion for and understanding of diverse youth populations
    • Compassionate approach to others and openness to new ideas
    • Dynamic energy, able to multi-task and negotiate multiple demands on attention
    • Non-judgmental approach and ability to empathize with others
    • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including detail-oriented
    • Ability to work independently
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Experience working in a social services setting, OR community based non-profit organization
    • At least 2-years administrative experience working within a harm reduction or youth experiencing homelessness setting
    • Notary licensure required or ability to obtain within the first 4 months of hire.
