Carlson Community Services is a vibrant nonprofit that enhances the quality of life on the Northwest side of Chicago (Irving Park neighborhood) throughout the community with their after-school program, fine arts concert series, and organic community garden. We’re looking for a highly skilled Executive Director (ED) to continue the positive momentum of this important community resource. Reporting to the board of directors, the ED will oversee the strategic and operational efficiencies of our programs and (mostly volunteer) staff. This seasoned leader will be able to manage multiple programs and will also have experience in cultivating donors and executing a fundraising plan. Strong grant writing skills will be key to success in this role. Established relationships with local community groups are a plus. Above all the ED should be highly effective in a leadership role that requires clear communication skills and decisiveness.
● Responsible for the strategy, execution and coordination of Carlson’s operations and programs
● Oversee daily operations of the organization
● Ensure that programs and funding relationships meet or exceed strategic goals and objectives
● Increase awareness of the organization by being the main spokesperson and liaison with neighborhood organizations and local media using social media, neighborhood newsletters, and our own newsletter to build awareness of our events and needs
● Serve as the face of the organization and participate in external events to increase visibility, credibility, and brand awareness. Develop strategic partnerships to further increase community connection and engagement programs
● Work with staff, board, and volunteers on annual fundraising events, and oversee all external communication
● Review, develop, and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, including grants, donations, and sponsorships
● Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and partners including Iriving Park Lutheran Church (IPLC). Communicate with IPLC regarding facility use and needs.
● Prepare accurate and timely analyses that capture and communicate fundraising results, variances, and performance trends
● Provide leadership to and manage the efforts of site staff to ensure appropriate support of all programs
● Work with Treasurer to ensure timely processing of payroll, invoices, and filings with the State and IRS.
● Manage social media accounts, donor database, web site, Constant Contact and online giving platforms
● Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in business, education, social services or communications
● Three or more years of experience in senior management, preferably with nonprofit organizations
● Proven track record of success with running fundraising initiatives and grant writing
● Knowledge of volunteer recruitment and volunteer involvement for the organization’s success
● Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills
Proficient in English. Additional language skills desirable but not required.
