    Position Overview

    The deputy director is a senior organizational leader who works cross-functionally to provide strategic partnership and support to the executive director, advance development and fundraising efforts in support of a $1.37M and growing budget, ensure smooth operations, and position the organization for sustainable growth.

    The deputy director serves as primary liaison with outsourced accounting, administrative, and operations providers; supervises the communications manager; and will work closely with development consultants including a contracted grant writer. Over time, this position will develop and hire development, operations, and administrative staff positions in alignment with continued organizational growth.

    Core Responsibilities

    Development 50%

    Build and manage day-to-day development functions and work with the executive director and contracted services to increase and diversify organizational revenue:

    • With executive director, select and onboard development consultants and/or fractional services to support fundraising strategy and plans to meet annual and multi-year revenue targets and increase individual and corporate giving
    • Codify, strengthen, and scale development systems, policies, and procedures across all revenue sources including individual, corporate, foundation and government grants to ensure:
      • Smooth departmental functioning and administration
      • Alignment between fundraising strategy and execution
      • Coordination between development and other teams including finance and programs
    • Partner with executive director, consultants, and the board of directors on campaigns, events, and meaningful donor cultivation and stewardship
    • Contribute to grant proposal and report development with executive director and contracted grant writer(s)
    • Oversee donor CRM and maximize organizational use of development data and analytics to inform decision-making
    • Supervise the communications manager and ensure alignment of externally-facing communications and media with fundraising plans

    Leadership and Strategy, 20%

    Act as a thought partner and support to the executive director in leading the organization through a period of strategic growth:

    • Partner with the executive director on organizational strategic planning, including refining the organization’s current five-year plan and developing future growth plans
    • Support the executive director with board governance and fiduciary responsibilities, drafting and reviewing reports and meeting materials, and maintaining board documents
    • Support the executive director in day-to-day oversight, including leading weekly all-staff meetings, bi-weekly director team meetings, setting and tracking progress toward organizational goals and objectives, and ensuring successful completion of grant deliverables
    • Manage key projects related to organizational growth and capacity-building

    Operations, 30%

    Provide leadership and oversight to operations, ensuring effective organizational functioning and systems:

    • Partner with the Executive Director and board finance committee to develop and manage the organizational budget, monitor revenue and expenses against the established budget, and ensure appropriate management of organizational resources
    • Partner with outsourced accounting firm to ensure smooth and effective financial management and systems, grant monitoring, monthly and annual close out, accurate internal and external financial reporting, and organizational audit preparations
    • Partner with outsourced operations and administrative services to support oversight of human resources including hiring, compensation and benefits, employment policies and procedures, and payroll administration; vendor management; and business administration

    Qualifications and Core Competencies

    • At least seven years of relevant leadership experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably in the arts or creative youth development
    • Collaborative and creative leader with the ability to operate on strategic, managerial and hands-on levels
    • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking, clear decision-making, and resourcefulness in setting priorities and solving complex operational problems
    • Experience working with diverse stakeholders including nonprofit boards, staff, vendors and donors
    • Deep understanding of development and fundraising strategy, systems, and best practices across revenue sources, including experience with a donor CRM
    • Ability to read and interpret financial reports and information, develop and manage complex budgets, and use financial analytics to monitor organizational fiscal health and resource allocation
    • Operates with a high level of integrity

    This is a full-time, exempt position at $100K per year.

    Working Environment

    This is a hybrid position with in-person attendance at our Brooklyn Creative Sound Lab anticipated at least once per week on average.

    Willie Mae Rock Camp integrates music, technology, and STEM to empower girls and gender-expansive youth ages 10-17 across NYC with the skills and confidence to thrive as creative leaders in a tech-driven future.

    Founded in 2004, Willie Mae Rock Camp was among the first rock camps for girls in the U.S. Over time, we have grown beyond rock-based instruction to year-round programs integrating music instruction and creative expression with digital and analog technologies. We now reach hundreds of girls and gender-expansive youth annually through tuition-free programming in schools, community sites, and our Brooklyn Sound Lab.
