    The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP)

    Founded in 1983, AVP empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and HIV affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and supports survivors through counseling, legal services and advocacy. AVP envisions a world in which all LGBTQ and HIV affected people are safe, respected and live free from violence.

    PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

    New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project has an immediate opening for a bilingual (Spanish/English) or multilingual paralegal to support to AVP’s attorneys providing consultation, representation and advocacy to LGBTQ+ clients. The paralegal will prepare legal documents, schedule client intakes and file court documents among other responsibilities. This is a temporary position with an end date of June 30, 2026 and the hope of a long-term extension as funding permits.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Manage, track, and enter data on the Legal Services Department’s progress toward its goals and grant activities;
    • Maintain relevant files;
    • Under the close supervision of AVP attorneys, assist in interviewing and drafting for our clients;
    • Coordinate community trainings on LGBTQ legal matters;
    • Schedule client intakes;
    • File court documents;
    • Translate written material from Spanish to English;
    • Interpret for Spanish speaking clients during client/attorney meetings;
    • Attend regular departmental and staff meetings;
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Paralegal certificate, bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience;
    • Highly organized with an ability to pay close attention to detail;
    • Ability to prioritize work and multi-task in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment;
    • Excellent computer skills (proficient with Microsoft Office);
    • Excellent interpersonal skills;
    • Ability to handle confidential materials and information;
    • Bilingual Spanish/English required;
    • Experience with non-profit organizations, LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities, and/or anti-violence issues.

    Hours: 32-hour work week. Hours are generally 10am – 6pm, Monday through Thursday and 10-2pm on Friday. This position may require some work during the evening and/or weekend to support AVP programming. This position is based in the AVP office in Manhattan and will require a hybrid of both remote and in-person work.

    AVP is a unionized workplace: Members of the bargaining unit are represented by the Office Professional Employees International Union Local 153. This bilingual paralegal role is part of our staff bargaining unit, and employment in this position requires membership in the staff union.

    SALARY & BENEFITS

    Salary: $36.00-$36.95 per hour ($60,000-$61,500 annually). Full-time, hourly non-exempt position with full benefits and time off, including paid vacation and sick time. Base salary is $60,000 annually. Candidates who speak and use a second language are eligible for a $1,500 multilingual annual salary enhancement.
