    Behind the Book (BtB) inspires young people to cultivate their vast potential through programs centered on diverse books and their authors. We primarily work with K–12 students from Title I schools and low-income communities. BtB fosters students' motivation to read and empowers their voices through the transformative power of storytelling. Students engage in storytelling, multiple art forms, and project-based learning to build literacy, critical thinking, and social-emotional skills.

    Position Overview: The Program Operations & Engagement Coordinator plays a key role in supporting program data management, volunteer engagement, and communications. The ideal candidate is a systems-thinker with strong organizational and people skills, and a passion for educational equity and youth development. This role helps coordinate volunteers, manages program data and supports communication/community engagement. This role reports directly to the Director of Programs and works closely with program coordinators, development team and other members of the organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    Volunteer Coordination

    • Recruit, onboard, train, and support volunteers.
    • Track volunteer engagement; current, past, and prospective
    • Work with Program Coordinators and Director of Programs to match and schedule volunteers with workshops and programming needs.
    • Work with the Program team to evaluate volunteer engagement and incorporate feedback.
    • Maintain volunteer engagement via Mailchimp and other platforms.
    • Work with the development and program team to organize volunteer engagement opportunities for corporate groups, the Board of Directors (BOD), and the Youth Engagement Board (YEB).

    Data & Evaluation

    • Track and sustain data and evaluation (surveys, feedback forms, observation rubrics) for students, educators, and volunteers.
    • Analyze evaluation data and prepare reports for internal learning and external stakeholders.
    • Manage photo documentation, storage, and use permissions related to programming.

    Communication

    • Support the implementation and management of social media strategy to grow our online presence (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn) to elevate brand awareness and community engagement.
    • Support newsletters and campaign communications via Mailchimp.
    • Support storytelling efforts through gathering and sharing volunteer testimonials and program highlights.
    • Assist with minor website maintenance.

    General Operation Support

    • Supports program operation, such as the ordering of student books, book inventory etc.
    • Help maintain program data systems up to date
    • Support other organization needs such as the BtB annual Book Bash and Benefit
    • Other relevant duties as assigned by Director of Programs

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience in program coordination, volunteer management, education, youth development, schools, project management or a related nonprofit setting.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; a collaborative team player.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
    • Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and support volunteers
    • Proficient in data management and evaluation, and experience with performance analysis and using evaluation tools (e.g., surveys, feedback forms, rubrics).
    • Skilled or interested in communications and digital engagement, including social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn.
    • Deep commitment to educational equity, youth empowerment, and BtB’s mission.
    • Technologically adept; comfortable with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and basic web management platforms.
    • Familiarity with tools like Canva, Salesforce, Airtable, Mailchimp, Formstack, preferred.
