Earthwise Aware

Earthwise Aware (EwA) is a nonprofit that connects people with nature through participatory science and systems thinking. We collaborate with communities, scientists, and conservation experts to document biodiversity, monitor ecological change, and promote ethical, evidence-based action. By prioritizing data transparency, inclusion, and ecological literacy, we help build more resilient and equitable conservation practices.

EwA’s participatory science program supports biodiversity and climate research while advancing the democratization of science. Focused on diverse urban habitats, many in Greater Boston, the program fills critical data gaps that inform local, state, and national priorities. Through its projects, partnerships, and integrative approach, the program offers a model for organizations seeking to adopt best practices in participatory research.

EwA fosters scientific contribution and experiential learning through a participatory science program (citizen science) that takes a systems-based approach with a focus on in situ species interactions. Collectively, the program’s projects build a continuous natural history of local habitats.

EwA participatory scientists use technology to gather data that addresses key knowledge gaps. They follow rigorous protocols and specialized apps to compile robust information on pollinators and their host plants, arthropod and bird abundance, the timing of plant and animal life events, invasive species, indicators of habitat degradation, and more.
